Subject: Supernanny producer needs your help!

Ricochet, makers of the hugely successful ‘Supernanny’ and ‘Who Rules The Roost?’ are making a new programme about single parents for Channel 4

‘Happy Families’ This is an upbeat, positive documentary about single parents embarking on new relationships.

If you’re a single mum or dad who is happy in life and love, we have a proposition that could make your life even better …

Contact Matt for more information:

Tel: 01273 224800 Email: matt.grover@ricochet.co.uk

Ricochet, the producers of ‘Supernanny’ and ‘Who Rules the Roost’ are making a brand new show ‘Happy Families’ for Channel 4 which will be an upbeat positive documentary about single parents embarking on new relationships. With nearly 12 million single parents in the UK, the film will be a celebration of success stories of people who may have had failed first marriages/serious relationships but have found what they hope is the right person second time around. We are looking for couples who are serious about each other, but still haven’t taken the next stage of moving in together, understandably a more complicated option when there are kids involved. We are looking to talk to dating single parents for research purposes to hear first hand of their experiences back on and off the dating scene. We are also looking for up for it dating single parents who’d consider the challenge of moving in together for a trial period of three weeks. We’d offer them advice from experts with a wealth of experience dealing with kids and parents from blended families, if they felt this would ease the transition.

Why not encourage youths by rewarding them for reporting untaxed vehicles? That would give them a reason to look for cars, other than to vandalise them.

Can anyone who contributes to the forum tell me about the area around the Saltdean Football ground? The new buildings, (Looes Close), seem to have blended in nicely. Does all the land which contains the caravans and the large frames with broken glass belong to one owner?
The roadway/bridleway from Coombe Vale, in the stretch as far as the football ground, is bordered by wild plants, nettles, blackberries etc; which attract a variety of insects, including lovely butterflies. Unfortunately, one also finds much litter and dogs excrement by the roadside, despite the containers provided for the disposal of same.

It is such a shame that some teenagers seem hell bent on destroying the public toilets in the pavilion at Saltdean park as well as four break ins since february. These acts of vandalism are always at the weekend so if your teens are abroad late maybe they should be asked where they were and what they have been doing.
Or maybe the modern parent doesnt care as long as they are out of sight.

So the beautiful detached house on the coast road at the end of Newlands Road in Rottingdean is to go for 'development', despite all our protests. Do planners ever listen to us? Of course not, especially where profit is concerned. I wish I had the money to buy it. Expect an ugly block of flats there before long. Does anyone know a) Just WHY is it being sold for development (it was only built 40 years ago and b) What is planned? Town planners & the developers who buy land/properties won't rest until we're a nation of flat-dwellers. I expect Newick House will go the same way....

Hi Everyone

Oh wow many thanks to those that e-mailed me over the postcards, it was lovely to hear from people, obviously people prefer personal contact then leaving messages on here. Many thanks for my website link as well XXXX

Okay today I am looking for any strips of negatives that no one wants, these can be of anywhere in the UK, basically I am going to blow them up, cut out Auntie Dill & Uncle John and try & make a picture out of what is left.

Todays technology is fab and some of these photographs bring out stuff that wasn't important at the time for putting on a postcard. I had some donated yesterday and it involved Gold Hill at Shaftesbury where they made the Hovis advert, oh wow nostalgia just flooded back.

Anyway my address is on my website, if not e-mail me, or leave a message on here, anyone that wants a negative blowing up for a picture or something feel free to get i touch, as everyone knows I love to chat, my postcard nostalgia is right up my street really, I think I am just on the right age.

Okie Doke, better go.

Calm down, you reactionary writers!
I am referring to the feathered variety.
Birds are a big part of the pleasure of living in such a lovely place as this.
I have seen fewer starlings in the garden this year, probably due to the fact that I blocked off their entrance to my loft where they nested for several years. I got tired of washing their mess off the glass and walls. I have seen sparrows aplenty, and magpies by the dozen. The song of the blackbirds, when their beaks are not stuffed with worms, is a pleasant change from ‘Top Of The Pops’. Sadly, I have not yet seen the two Red Legged Partridges, which knocked on the patio doors last year, and the year before. And I have only caught a brief glimpse of the most exotic of my regular visitors, the Green Woodpecker, who seems to have deserted me in favour of next door. Collared doves and woodpigeons are welcome guests, and even the ubiquitous seagulls are less intrusive, now that more of us are recycling our rubbish, or at least putting it safely wrapped in bags in the containers provided. Can we get a (civilised) bird lovers discussion going? Don’t worry about the syntax.

Hi, not sure if this is a well worn discussion for Saltdean residents but I am considering moving into the area and have noticed lot properties are for sale in the area near the masts at the top of Longridge Avenue, particularly Rodmell Avenue where there seems to be 4 or 5 practically next door to each other for sale.

Is there any particular reason or hazard given that they back on to farm land and are just below the mast ?

I know that there is no proven link between masts and health except possibly for the very old or very young but have there been noticeable problems in this area which might result in the number of for sale signs ?

How do saltdean residents generally feel about the masts ?

Anybody watching?
The presence of the arch-feminist Germaine Greer, in the same room as the boorish Mc Cririck, of Channel 4 Racing fame, has doubtless drawn a few new viewers to Celebrity BB. Being one of her many male admirers, and old enough to lay claim to having read The Female Eunuch when it was first published, I expected the sparks to fly between the formidable intellectual and the chauvinistic outspoken tipster.
Instead, the one-time verbal destroyer of such literary giants as Norman Mailer, treated the hirsute horse lover to cups of tea and a snack in bed; and behaved generally like the obedient wife on the recent Wife Swap show. The grumpy, angry old man, with whom I share an enthusiasm for the ‘sport of kings’, and at whom I have at times smiled, because of his outlandish fashion, and equally outlandish remarks, has managed, during these few days, to convince me that he really is every bit as ill-tempered and ill-mannered as one could imagine. The redoubtable Ms Greer, whom I have always placed on a pedestal, has added to her prestige by showing unplumbed depths of maternal instinct, along with unexpected culinary skills.

Bob the local milkman, has delivered milk and groceries for the last 5 years. The good thing about bob is, that he delivered it before 6am and never missed a day. Unfortunately, the Dairy Crest manager Phil Massey has decided to sabotage a perfect arrangement by cutting back on staff, thus doubling each milkman's round from 300 to 600 customers. Now, the milk will only be delivered 3 days a week instead of the usual 6 days, and never before 6:30am.....
If like me, you feel that Dairy Crest is abusing its monopoly then please phone 01273 500711 to register your complaints. I would also be interested to know how many people are affected by these new changes.

Having lived in Saltdean for 15yrs & worked at the 'Grand Ocean Hotel', for those interested, I would like to vent my views & frustrations along with some 'Behind the scenes' info regarding the Hotel.
During the mid nineties I started working at the Hotel as the resident Drummer. This gave me chance to experience the workings of the Hotel and spend many hours talking to the guests. With carpentry qualifications under my belt I took the position as 'Hotel carpenter' working for the maintenance department.
Through the latter years of my time at the Hotel I left the band and took charge of the whole maintainance dept.
Whilst many Saltdean residents didn't take too kindly to having this Hotel on their doorstep, to some it did have it's advantages. The local co-op had a good stream of customers purchasing milk, bread, tea bags, coffee etc...
The off licence, selling beers & wines. The bus service & local Taxi's ferrying guests to & from Brighton. Many more but I won't to bore you.
As for the Hotel...Regarding staff. I met some brilliant people from managers down to cleaners. I say Down for want of a better word. Cleaners, porters, waitreses, bartenders. Most of them gave 100%.
Kevin Dean, catering manager who insisted on staff inspection before every meal, ensuring all waters & waitresses were looking clean & tidy.
Lynda & Mo, who ran housekeeping. Two large ladies who ensured that all rooms were cleaned, beds made etc to their satisfaction, and boy-if it wasn't, their staff certainly knew about it. Many more like this but as I said earlier, too much can be boring.
Whilst singing peoples praises, I need to mention the, then manager Jim Waldock. Lots of people (staff) hated him-why.
He was a taskmaster-very firm But very fair. A man with a brilliant memory which won him plenty of arguments which I experienced first hand. On the good side, his door was open to all-this included staff at all levels and to any guest.
Guest, customer? this title will never be resolved. Hoteliers prefer the name guest BUT some managers say that if someone is paying for a room then they become a customer-An argument which will run for decades!
I have only covered the surface here & hope that I have given some insight as to how the Hotel was run & to the dedication of most of the people working here. So why do
we hear of complaints from some Guests/customers.
The answer is finance!
Anyone who is in business for themselves will understand this and those who arent, hopefully will appreciate this.
In business you strive to give the best service you can.
This is dictated by your attitutde, service and the economy of your business. The easy part is that you are free to run your business your way. If it fails then it's down to you.(Most of the time--okay excluding some unforseen events.)
On the other hand The Grand Ocean Hotel has never been in this fortunate position. During my time at the Hotel it was owned by Rank, then known as Butlins, which then change to Park Worlds until being taken over by a private consortium.
All the above during their time , had their say in how the hotel should look, be run, where cuts had to be made, where changes had to be made. Irrispective of wether any changes were for the good or bad....they had to be made. I will not bore you with details as there are many where we as staff have experienced major changes, knowing they were white elephants and had to go with it. Unfortunately the Hotel Manager would have to take the brunt...well he is the boss.
Incorrect.....he was the manager-having to manage with what was thrown at him.Budgets...what a brilliant word. Keep within your budget-but at the same time, retain a smile on your face even when complaints are being fired at you from all directions. Its not realy my fault.....I only work here!

In reply to Joe's reply to Nicky! I agree about the pool being covered - there must be a reasonable way to do this with some temporary arrangement that can be removed in warm weather. But I do still think that the art-deco look of the place should be preserved - like Butlitz up the road - because only by preserving these buildings can we prevent them being bulldozed in favour of the ugly, depressing, lumps of concrete which pass for flats these days.

If you have a problem getting out of the road to go to Brighton, why not turn left and then turn back at the mini roundabout at the bottom of Longridge avenue rather than create another roundabout or set of traffic lights.
If there were not double lines down Arundel drive and people parked along there at intervals, it would slow the traffic down a great deal as in my road, Bannings Vale.

Still, when the bus lanes arrive on the A259 none of us will be able to drive into Brighton.

Hi... Not sure wether im allowed to sell items on this site?? But here goes... (apologies if im breaking any rules J)
I have a wonderful Technics SX EX-70 Organ for sale, its been a superb instrument, and still works just like the day it was made! It has 2 keyboards(manuals) with PCM voice technology (sounds just like the real instrument its trying to copy!) Loads of styles to play with... Shuffle / disco / 8 beat / 16 beat etc etc.... It will go to its new owner with the stool, instruction manuals, Midi manuals and the RAM (Extra voice memory) pack. It folds in 1/2 for ease of transport (i can deliver within Saltdean / Woodingdean / Rottingdean and Peacehaven etc. It will fit into a LARGE estate car (Volvo / Mondeo / Zafira) Its in PERFECT condition apart from the music stand on the top wich has a crack in the perspex :( apart from that as ive said its perfect, and plays perfectly..... It has a 6 speaker system built into the base of the organ and an on board amplifier with 200w of music power! (its very loud when required) It has MIDI capability (can connect to other keyboards / organs and your PC!) Headphone output for silent play, auxilliary output for another amplifier (as if you'd need it lol) and 3 inputs for microphones etc! ALL this would have cost well over £6000 when new! Im selling for £350 ono (oh by the way it has a roller type cover AND A LOCK AND KEY! so if you have children you can keep thier fingers off if you want to!..... It has loads and loads of buttons and can look a bit daunting to start with, but once you get the hang of it its really easy to play and it sounds GREAT!)

Does anyone else think it's about time there were traffic lights at this extremely busy junction? At certain times of the day, and getting more frequently, it takes forever trying to turn right out of Arundel Drive East onto the Coast Road. One day there will be an awful smash-up as an impatient driver tries to exit. The council said in the past there's 'no money', but it can find plenty of money to exacerbate the situation by putting in an unwanted and unnecessary bus lane.

Whilst out walking onto the Downs from the village - along the path that extends from the top of Coombe Rise, we spied what lookes like an observatory . . . just along from Coombe Farm in the valley - the round dome structure to the right in this picture:
http://www.pintados.co.uk/images/coombe obs.jpg

IS it an observatory? If so of what? If not, what is it?!

We don't remember seeing it on previous walks, although we use this bridelway regularly. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Keith

Many homes in the Saltdean Area, particularly the hillier parts have a soakaway for surface water from the roof or from baths and washbasins.

If have a soakaway you are entitled to a reduced water bill of £19 per year. Southern Water do not automatically apply this reduction you have to ask!!. I live in Ashdown Avenue and my neighbour and I successfully applied for a reduced water bill. Southern Water will only go back 2 years and we both got £38. Not bad for a 5 minute letter!

Moans and groans, I’ve read many here
Aliens are coming, oh, dear, oh dear
The hotel is changing, is that a bad thing?
Reason to complain, or reason to sing?

I’ve lived in the village for just a few years
I’ve lost a few neighbours, who died
Though new to the area, I came close to tears
I wonder if ‘the community’ cried

I know one or two who live all alone
Too old to manage their chores
I give one a hand; help him to phone
And do what I can out of doors

I don’t go to meetings, buy or sell bric-a-brac
But I’m always there at his call
I couldn’t be part of a vigilante pack
But I’ll fight, if my back’s to the wall

In the words of the old and beautiful song
(And I hope ‘the community’ feels the same)
If I can help somebody as I pass along,
Then my living will not be in vain

We don’t really see the neighbours much
But most will nod and smile
We don’t really mix with them, as such
Mixing is not our style

But it’s nice to look along the road
On a bleak and blustery day
And see youngsters who are not out to goad
But to meet, and just to play

There are those who always believe the worst
Who see evil at a glance
Let us try to see the good side first
Give our village half a chance

Have just got back from a weekend at The Grand Ocean Hotel, and have to say it was the most awful experience we have ever faced in our lives.... the hotel was falling to pieces, the staff were unfriendly, the food was awful, the room terrible, and to make matters worse, some yobs staying in the hotel, set the fire alarm off at 12.05am, so we all had to evacuate the hotel, and then again at 3.05am, again making us evacuate, the staff obviously made sure they were ok, as far as us paying guests were concerned, well, I don't think they were bothered, we need some kind of therapy now, we were looking forward to a nice break, (we had paid enough for it) I am sure we will laugh about it one day.... there should be a support group set up, for ex residents, for sure....

For the past 20 years my father has been collecting and sorting stamps for a host of charity shops - many of you may have seen the displays of small clear packages that they sell.

It all started when as am ambulance man he started working with the St. John's ambulance service, training their people in first aid. He wanted to do more and had collected stamps as a boy. That was a long time ago and now he drives up and down the land refreshing dispays in the various charity shops.

For him this is just a way of contributing something back and keeping busy in his retirement. He doesn't take any payment from them - even for the petrol or the little clear envelopes!

As most business post doesn't now use stamps he's found it increasingly difficult to get stamps to sort and package. It used to be that they arrived by the sack but now it's just the odd carrier bag or old album.

If you have any that you have saved please do drop them by at 12 Hawthorn Close, Saltdean. I'll make sure they get quickly passed on.

With thanks in advance,

HELP IN TV RESEARCH!

At Brighton University we are presently undertaking research into the use of digital television. This entails investigating how useful and practical current services on digital TV are for younger and older viewers. Examining both how easy digital television is to use, and how appropriate it is for different audience groups.

We are currently looking for volunteers over the age of 60 to help us in our research, people both with and without experience in using digital television. We welcome people to come to the university and become actively involved.

During a one hour research session, we are asking people to:

·Answer a short, simple questionnaire, asking questions about TV viewing habits, possible experience to digital TV, and experiences to other technologies (such as a PC, Internet).

·Try a small number of tasks, interacting with various services on Sky Digital.

·Followed by a round up of questions on experiences in using those services.

We can’t afford much, but we will give each participate a £5 gift voucher as a token of our appreciation. Plus we will also try and help with transport costs, such as paying for bus tickets. Tea and coffee will also be freely provided.

Please not that the research is not a test; there are no right and wrong answers, we are only interested in people’s opinions.

If any is interested, the research is taking place between the 19-30 of January. PLease contact Mark Rice on 01273 642535, or email me on M.D.Rice@bton.ac.uk, to as further questions or to be come involved.

Everyone in CWS (our shop at least) are totally panicing - we've been told that next year we will have totally new computers and ePOS systems - thats all.

The old tills are really poor - ISS300 for anyone working in that field. It may seem trivial - but this technology is the heart of the running of the shop - and the co-op have left us in the dark again!!

Hello

Each May, 'Brighton Festival' is a huge & popular event and an excellent opportunity for local artists of all sorts to have their work seen. For 2004 we're exploring the possibility of a 'Saltdean Trail' as part of the festival. i.e. a number of village based artists (painters, photographers, stained glass, garden scultors, etc) exhibiting in a co-ordinated way around Saltdean. We'll be holding a meeting of interested people shortly, please contact us if you're interested in attending: 241650 or workshops@pintados.co.uk

We'd also like to hear from any of the local businesses who'd be interseted in having some art displayed in their shops, offices etc or who might like to sponsor a 'Saltdean Trail'.

We'd particularly like to hear from any local artist who creates garden sculptors - we may have space to display some!

Many thanks

I have written an article for anyone who got hit by the recent "Blaster Worm" and can not install the Microsoft security patch... and there seems to be many...

Perhaps saltdean residents would benefit?

Two gentlemen require an experienced cleaner with references for 3 to 4 hours work each week. General housework plus some occassional ironing and as much tea and coffee as you can drink.

We seem to have acquired a long-haired tortoiseshell cat with white bib and white paws. Does anyone know who she belongs to?

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,

I am coming to Brighton in September to follow English courses and work in music publishing field as well. My stay will last about three months. I would like to know if you have got flats (one or two rooms) for renting. As I am coming by car I would like to have the possibility of parkking it either in the street or in a garage in the area.

Best regards

We're looking for a reliable gardener to come for a few hours once a month to keep small front and back gardens tidy. Mainly weeding, grass cutting and trimming shrubs. Do you know of anyone suitable?

hello all you Saltdeanites out there. I've finally decided to go interactive for the community. Obscene messages will be removed (please don't post any as it causes extra work!)
Otherwise hope you enjoy and find it useful.

Go on the 77 bus - it's a really pretty journey but watch for the trees in Dyke Road if you are sitting up the top. Go on a breezy day and fly your kite at the Dyke.
Really fab and it makes a change from the car - kids will love it.

The curse of the new cashpoints happens again. Anybody notice that the new flashy cashpoints in Longridge and Lustrells conk out when it's too hot yet the clunky old Natwest one in Rottingdean still works. Why?
