Excess speeds for cars and plenty of young moped riders, exceeding the speed limit and NOT wearing a crash helmet AND passengers on these mopeds also NOt wearing crash helmets Grrrrrr [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

He He thanks Joe, There used to be a track for motorbikes / BMX bikes at the top of wilson avenue, however i think thats been taken over by the travellers! again :( The riding of mopeds along the public highway is perfectly legal (and safe when these machines are in the right hands!) but when these youngsters deliberatley forget to wear a crash helmet, then it really gets to me... As a youngster i was never allowed a motorbike, and to be quite honest i didnt want one either, I can see the enjoyment that they get from riding a motorbike (i know quite a few bikers) however.... would they enjoy it from the confines of a wheelchair after an accident that leaves them in this condition. There is also the fact to consider that saltdean has NOTHING for teenagers to do / get involved in? apart from the local club (if its still going) I have lived here since 1981 when i was 8yrs old, and then there was nothing to do in the area unless you were of the age when you could drive! Anyway must get off my soap box now........lol Regards John |

Date Posted: 08:46:34 02/02/05 Wed Hi, again, John; I’m an old boy. I couldn’t afford a pushbike as a kid. When my sons wanted motorbikes, I said ‘over my dead body’. With their mother on their side, they ganged up on me, and quickly got the machines they wanted. They soon passed their tests and became good riders. Indeed my wife and I spent many a happy weekend at Brands Hatch, and at Snetterton, where one of the sons proved to be a very competent Club Racer. So, I am not against speed per se; just needs to be in properly trained hands, in the right place. I know how much fun it can be. (My son once took me as a pillion passenger round Goodwood, my head almost touching the grass, and the seat of my pants feeling wet, as he leaned the big Kawasaki round the corners). My particular concern about local speed stems from the very serious accident just a few years ago in the area that I mentioned, in which an elderly driver sustained an injury to his leg. After several operations, he managed to walk again. However, he went to visit his GP, pointing out a lump on the damaged leg, and was told that it was an embolism. He died of a stroke about a month later. All the best Joe |

Date Posted: 04:39:20 04/01/05 Fri How would wearing a crash helmet prevent spinal injuries and the consequent confinement to a wheelchair ? I have lived in the area since I was a child and I am frankly amazed at your comment that teenagers have nothing to do !!! Saltdean is sandwiched between the downs & the sea giving children of all ages the opportunity to go mountain biking, fishing, walking, surfing, summer days on the beach, pitch & putt etc, etc. They do not need to have any manufactured enjoyment laid on for them, it this kind of unimaginative encouragment that causes these problems. It is the easy life option - let him have a moped it will keep him quiet. Mopeds serve no purpose for teenagers other than to cause traffic hazards. What would be the other options ? of course the trusty local youth clubs, allowing rowdy kids to congregate and then be turfed out a 9 or 10 at night in a gang with nothing better to do than fight or vandalise public facilities. In my opinion youth clubs are the cause of most late evening problems and contribute at least 85% of all unwanted teenage pregnancies. As a young lad, there was nothing better than going for a long walk over the downs, taking in the views and the fresh air with the occasional fantastic added bonus of discovering a cache of discarded hardcore porn. |

Date Posted: 03:19:21 04/02/05 Sat >I think much of the problem lies with this country's molly-coddling laws which severely limit the number of hours a week teenagers under 16 can work. Both my sons wanted part-time jobs but all they could get was a paper round, and they had to wait for a vacancy for that. I'm sure many of these kids would prefer to be earning a bit of money in the evenings & weekends - on the job front they're still classed as children but according to bus companies and cinemas, they're adults. |
