CONNOR SITS ON THE EDGE OF THE FOUNTAIN, STARING BLANKLY AHEAD. SITTING NEXT TO HIM, OFFERING COMPANIONABLE SILENCE, IS SPIKE. SPIKE IS LOOKING DOWN AT THE COURTYARD, NOT UNCOMFORTABLE, JUST UNSURE OF WHAT TO SAY TO CONNOR TO HELP HIM AFTER CODY’S DEATH.

CONNOR
(barely more than a whisper)
Do you think he’s ok?

SPIKE
(caught off guard by Connor speaking to him)
What’s that?

CONNOR
(still looking forward, a blank look on his face)
Cody, do you think he’s ok now? I mean, you died so maybe you might know.

SPIKE
(sorry he doesn’t have better things to say)
Don’t rightly know, mate. I don’t remember much about what it was like, but I’m sure he’s ok.
(pause as Spike tries to find the right words)
Why did you call me here, Connor?

CONNOR
Had no one else to call. Cody was my only real friend in the city, you’re the closest thing to a friend I have right now.

SPIKE
Fair enough.

CONNOR
So what happens now?

SPIKE
Now we honor your friend the best we can.

CONNOR
(understanding)
A funeral.

SPIKE
(standing up)
I have a few things to get done, I’ll be back by nightfall. Will you be ok?

CONNOR

SPIKE

EXT – CAFÉ – EARLY MORNING

GWEN SITS ACROSS THE TABLE FROM A YOUNG MAN. HE LOOKS VERY RUFFLED, QUITE SKITTISH, AS IF HE WAS SCARED THAT HE WAS BEING WATCHED. GWEN IS MUCH MORE CALM, YET VERY FLUSTERED HERSELF.

GWEN
I don’t care how sure you are, no way am I doing it.

YOUNG MAN
(desperate)
Please, I’m begging you. You’re the only one who can get the concrete evidence that I need.

GWEN
(leaning over the table)
Look, Mr. Carver –

YOUNG MAN
(correcting her)
Zack.

GWEN
(smiling condescendingly)
Zack. I don’t do law firms, especially not this one. I’m sorry your brother’s missing –

ZACK
Danny’s dead. He was killed by his boss, Randall Clark, and I’m sure that Wolfram and Hart are covering it up.

GWEN
See, that’s the thing, sweetie. You have nothing to go on. And I am not going to try to rob a multi-billion dollar organization on a hunch that your brother was working for a murderer.

ZACK
(joyful realization)

(roots through a backpack next to his chair)

ZACK HANDS GWEN A PHOTOGRAPH. SHE TAKES IT WARILY.

(explaining)
I found that in Danny’s apartment last week. The man in that photo is Mr. Clark, the other one is a higher-up at Wolfram & Hart. I think Danny was onto something and Clark had him killed to keep him quiet.

GWEN
(quiet shock as she stares at the photo in her hand)
I’ll take the job.

ZACK
Really!? Oh thank you! If I may ask; why?

GWEN
(still staring at the photo)

KNOX PASSES FRED A SMALL DROPPER WITH GREEN LIQUID INSIDE. FRED SQUIRTS A FEW DROPS ONTO THE CONTENTS OF A PETRIE DISH UNDER THE MICROSCOPE’S LENS.

FRED
I’ve added the serum to the host tissue, now I’m going to introduce the donor tissue.

FRED USES DELICATE FORECEPS TO PLACE A SMALL SQUARE OF ORGANIC TISSUE INTO THE DISH. SHE THEN WATCHES INTENTLY THROUGH THE MICROSCOPE.

FRED
The donor tissue has formed a bond with the host tissue. So far no signs of rejection from the host cells. The serum appears to be doing the trick. The host cells are seeing the donor cells as compatible.
(to Knox)
Time?

KNOX
(checking his watch)
Thirty seconds.

FRED
(nodding)
This is when our past tests have gone kaplooey. So far this batch of the solution is working much better. Rejection is still negligible, the bond is holding. If we can get it to hold for a minute I think we can safely proclaim ourselves geniuses.
(to Knox)
Time?

KNOX
Ten seconds to go. Nine…Eight…Seven…

FRED
It’s still holding.

THE OTHER LAB SCIENTISTS BEGIN TO CHATTER AS IT SEEMS THEY’VE FINALLY BEEN SUCCESSFUL.

Yes we did! We finally did it! The Serum allows donor tissue to be grafted onto other tissue without being rejected by the host.

THE LAB ERUPTS IN CHEERING, A GROUP OF SCIENTISTS LIFTING FRED ONTO THEIR SHOULDERS IN CHEER. FRED LOOKS OVERJOYED, GIGGLING AND SMILING WIDE.

ANGEL SITS AT HIS DESK READING REPORTS FROM VARIOUS CONTACTS, TRYING TO KEEP TABS ON WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE CITY. SPIKE BARGES IN, NEGLECTING TO LET ANGEL’S ASSISTANT LET ANGEL KNOW HE HAS A VISITOR.

(looking up)

SPIKE
Maybe for you. Look, I have some news for you.

ANGEL
(gesturing to the reports on his desk)
Somehow I doubt that.

SPIKE
Connor’s friend died last night.

ANGEL
(instantly in brood-mode)
Is Connor okay?

SPIKE
Will be. I’m helping him bury the boy tonight. Something you’re very much not invited to.

ANGEL
(suddenly very interested)
Why not?

SPIKE
Seems your boy has no interest in having you comfort him. Uncle Spike is more than enough so Daddy McBrood isn’t wanted.

ANGEL
(simply)
He knows.

SPIKE
So it would seem. I’m very serious right now, Angel; if you know what’s best you won’t show up. Not even to spy from a distance.

SPIKE TURNS ON HIS HEEL, STRIDING OUT OF THE OFFICE. AS SPIKE EXITS LORNE RUSHES IN WITH A HUGE SMILE ON HIS FACE.

(stunned to see Lorne)

(off Angel’s brooding face)

FRED, KNOX AND THEIR TEAM CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE THEIR SUCCESS, SIPPING CHAPAGNE AND CHATTERING TRIUMPANTLY. SUDDENLY LILAH WALKS IN WITHOUT BEING NOTICED. SHE SURVEYS THE SCENE QUIETLY THEN BEGINS TO CLAP.

LILAH
Just checking out the festivities. Oh, that and steal your work. I want all the viable samples of the serum delivered to my office within the hour. Oh, and I want more of the serum produced by tomorrow.

LILAH
(snidely)
That’s for management to know and for lab techies to not find out.

FRED
You can’t just take our work like that, Lilah.

LILAH
Funny, that’s exactly what I’m doing.

LILAH TURNS AND LEAVES THE LAB, LEAVING A GROUP OF CONFUSED AND ANGRY SCIENTISTS IN HER WAKE.

INT – ANGEL’S OFFICE – DAY

ANGEL SITS AT HIS DESK, JUST FINISHING HIS STORIES FOR LORNE. LORNE TAKES ALL THE INFORMATION IN.

LORNE
Wow, that’s a lot of news to take in all at once. I think I might need a visit from my good friend Mrs. Seabreeze.
(sadly)
I don’t have any news like that.

WES
(walking into the office)
Angel?

ANGEL
Wes?

LORNE
(to Angel)
I thought he left the firm?

ANGEL
So did I.

WES
I did, unofficially. I’m here because I think we’re all in grave danger.

LORNE
I think I’ll take that Seabreeze now.

ANGEL
We’re always in danger, Wes, what makes now any different?

WES
Because this time we may not be able to stop it.

ANGEL
Explain.

WES
I believe the Senior Partners are planning something major for us, something we aren’t seeing.

ANGEL
(trying to be reasonable)
But Wes, the Senior Partners have always been after us, always planning the apocalypse.

WES
That’s why I’m concerned. Since the Senior Partners targetted us four years ago, we’ve always known they were up to something, we always knew then they were working against us. But now it seems as if they’ve given up on us, stopped planning. That indicates more than anything that they have something to hide.

ANGEL
So let me get this straight, you think Wolfram & Hart is planning something because they look as if they aren’t planning something?

WES
(defiant)
Yes.

LORNE
Well it’s as good a hunch as any.

ANGEL
Look, Wes, if this is because of you leaving the firm…

WES
I left because it was the right thing to do. We should never have joined with Wolfram & Hart.

ANGEL
I know you don’t trust them, none of us do…

WES
Then trust me, now.

ANGEL SEEMS TO CONTEMPLATE WHAT WES IS SAYING. WITH NO EXPRESSION ON HIS FACE, HE ANALYZES WES’ SUDDEN REVELATION.

ANGEL
Fine. I trust you. Get us something better to go on.

WES
That’s why I came to you, I need help.

ANGEL
That’s out of the question, if we make a move against the firm while still working here we put big targets on our backs. The senior partners would come down on us before we knew we were caught.

WES
I no longer have access to anything or anyone at the firm to gather any reliable intelligence.

LORNE
(sarcastically)
You could always bang some info out of the headless bitch.

ANGEL AND WES EXCHANGE A LOOK OF A PLAN SUDDENLY FORMING.

LORNE
(clueless)

INT – LILAH’S OFFICE – EVENING

LILAH IS ON THE PHONE, IDLY TOYING WITH A VIAL OF FRED’S GREEN SERUM.

LILAH
Yes, I understand. The sample is ready.
(pause)
Yes, I’ll arrange a meeting for tonight. Eight o’clock.
(pause)
We’ll discuss payment for our services after you’ve approved of our product.
(pause)
Yes sir, I’ll look forward to our meeting.

LILAH ENDS THE CALL, PLACING THE PHONE BACK ON THE DESK. HEARING A KNOCK ON HER OFFICE DOOR, SHE SCOWLS AT THE INTERRUPTION.

LILAH
(annoyed)
Come in.

WESLEY OPENS THE DOOR AND ENTERS CASUALLY.

LILAH
Well, well, well; if it isn’t the prodigal bad-ass. Come to talk business or did you have something else in mind?

WES
I was a fool to leave the firm.

LILAH
Hell, I could’ve told you that.
(pause)
Wait, I did tell you that.

WES
(walking slowly towards her)
You were right, Lilah.

LILAH
You always did know the right words to turn me on, Wes. But what brought on this epiphany?

WES
(getting very close to her)
When I realized how alone I’d be if I truly left.

LILAH
(smiling devilishly)
So you want back in the firm?

WES
Yes, I want back –
(looking Lilah up and down)

LILAH LOOKS AT WES, SIZING HIM UP. APPARENTLY FINDING WHAT SHE WAS LOOKING FOR, LILAH SMILED AT WESLEY.

INT – GWEN’S APARTMENT – EVENING

GWEN PACKS UP HER BURGLARY GEAR, PUTTING RANDOM GADGETS, ROPES AND ROPES INTO A BACKPACK. SATISFIED WITH HER PREPARATION, GWEN TURNS TO HER DESK, LOOKING AT THE PHOTO OF GUNN AND CLARK. FOCUSING ON THE IMAGE OF GUNN, GWEN HARDENS HER DEMEANOR.

GWEN
Wolfram & Hart, here I come.

EXT – GRAVEYARD NEAR HYPERION – NIGHT

SPIKE AND CONNOR STAND NEAR A MAKESHIFT GRAVE THAT SITS A FAIR DISTANCE FROM ANY OTHER GRAVESITE, NESTLED NEAR A SMALL GROVE OF WILLOW TREES. SPIKE HOLDS A SHOVEL AS CONNOR DRIVES A HOMEMADE CROSS INTO THE GROUND. SLOWLY BACKING UP TO STAND NEXT TO SPIKE, CONNOR KEEPS A STRONG FACE.

CONNOR
Is that it?

SPIKE
I suppose we could say a few words.

CONNOR
Like what?

SPIKE
I don’t know, pet, he was your friend. What do you think?

CONNOR
How about “Thank you Cody for being a part of my life, for being my best friend. I’ll miss you, but I hope you find your way home.”?

SPIKE
(smiling proudly)
That’ll do, pet.

INT – LILAH’S OFFICE – NIGHT

WES AND LILAH ARE KISSING, LILAH LAYING ON HER BACK ON HER DESK. THE ITEMS FROM HER DESK ARE ALL OVER THE FLOOR, PUSHED OFF THE DESK’S SURFACE HAPHAZARDLY. WES IS LEANING OVER LILAH, KISSING DOWN THE NAPE OF HER NECK, THE TOP HALF OF HER BLOUSE UNBUTTONED. AS WES CONTINUES HIS EXPLORATION, LILAH PUSHES HIS SHIRT OFF HIS SHOULDERS AND THROWS IT TO THE FLOOR.

LILAH
Not that I’m not –
(gasp)
- enjoying this, but why now?

WES
(kissing up to her ear)
I told you, I’m tired of being the lonely one.

LILAH
(smiling as Wes does something unseen to her ear)
Mmmmmmmm, you can be in my club anytime. Sure it’s just me, but at least you’d be in great company. Definitely never be alone.

WES
(nibbling on her ear)
Or a target.

LILAH SMILES, THOUGH WE DON’T KNOW IF IT’S BECAUSE SHE’S FIGURED OUT WES’ ACT OR BECAUSE OF WHAT HE’S DOING TO HER EAR. SUDDENLY LILAH FLIPS THEM OVER SO SHE IS STRADDLING HIS WAIST.

LILAH
I don’t know what you’re looking for, but I don’t have any information to squeeze out of me.

WES

LILAH

(standing up and buttoning her blouse)
We both know you wouldn’t come crawling back to Wolfram & Hart just for me. Not that it wasn’t great while it lasted, but I know you were working an angle the whole time. So what were you looking for?

WES
(looking up at her almost apologetically)
What you’re planning to do now that Angel Investigations is effectively under your control.

LILAH
My plans? Funny, once upon a time it was enough that you just knew I had them, now you need the gritty details. How’s this; get out. Out of here, and this time for good. I find out you’re trespassing on this property again, I’ll repay you for this.
(she gestures at her neck scar)

WES
Lilah…

LILAH
(softly)
Don’t make me call security.

WITHOUT A WORD, WES GETS UP AND PICKS UP HIS SHIRT. WITHOUT LOOKING BACK HE EXITS AND CLOSES THE OFFICE DOOR BEHIND HIM. LILAH STANDS MOTIONLESS FOR A MOMENT, LOOKING AS THOUGH ANYTHING WOULD CAUSE HER TO BREAKDOWN AND CRY. HER FACE RETURNING TO ITS USUAL HARDENED EXPRESSION, LILAH PICKS UP A GLASS FROM THE BAR NEAR HER DESK AND FLINGS IT AT THE DOOR WITH A SCREAM. AS THE PIECES OF GLASS SHATTER AND FALL TO THE GROUND LILAH STIFLES A SOB, CUTTING IT OFF BEFORE IT CAN BE HEARD.

INT – WOLFRAM & HART FILE ROOM – NIGHT

GWEN LEAFS THROUGH THE FILES IN A CABINET, HOLDING A SMALL FLASHLIGHT IN HER TEETH. HER HANDS STOP AS SHE FINDS WHAT SHE’S LOOKING FOR; A FILE MARKED “Carver, Daniel”. PUTTING THE FILE IN HER BACKPACK, SHE HEADS TOWARDS THE DOOR.

Cut To:

INT – HALLWAY INSIDE WOLFRAM & HART – NIGHT

GWEN STRIDES QUICKLY DOWN THE HALLWAY, FEARING WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF SHE WERE TO BE CAUGHT. GWEN STOPS AS SHE HEARS VOICES APPROACHING.

GUNN
(off screen)
I apologize for the inconvenience, it seems the associate you spoke to early is running late so I will be the representative you will be dealing with tonight, Mr. Clark.

THE CAMERA PANS AWAY FROM GWEN TO SHOW GUNN WITH THE OVERWEIGHT MAN FROM ZACK’S PHOTO ROUNDING THE CORNER IN THE HALLWAY. THEY PASS RIGHT BY WHERE GWEN WAS JUST STANDING.

CLARK
That’s quite all right, Mr. Gunn. After our meeting last week, I would be the most comfortable dealing with you rather than some of the characters I’ve met here.

GUNN
(chuckling)
It’s just Gunn, Mr. Clark. And I agree, some of our employees are quite colorful.

AS GUNN LEADS CLARK DOWN THE HALL AND OUT OF VIEW, THE CAMERA PANS UPWARD TO SHOW GWEN HIDING IN AN AIR VENT, SPYING ON GUNN AND CLARK.

INT – LILAH’S OFFICE – NIGHT

LILAH TIDIES UP HER OFFICE, TRYING TO FORGET ABOUT HER EARLIER ENCOUNTER WITH WESLEY. HER PHONE RINGS, STARTLING HER AND CAUSING HER TO DROP ANOTHER GLASS. STARING AT THE SHATTERED GLASS, SHE REACHES FOR HER PHONE.

LILAH
Damn.
(to phone)
Morgan.
(she freezes)
Yes, sir. Sorry, sir. I hadn’t realized you’d know about that.
(pause)
Of course, sir. I understand that it’s well within your job description to keep tabs on all the employees, I just didn’t realize that you would already know about something that happened less than an hour ago.
(pause, Lilah seems to be visibly agitated)
No, sir, it’ll never happen again. Believe me.
(pause)
Yes, sir. In the future I’ll remember to keep personal attachments separate from business.
(pause)
Yes, sir. Thank you, Mr. Wolfram.

LILAH HANGS UP, SIGHING IN RELIEF AS SHE THINKS ABOUT HOW CLOSE TO TERMINATION SHE JUST CAME. SHAKING OFF THE TENSION, SHE RETURNS TO CLEANING HER OFFICE.

INT – ANGEL’S OFFICE – NIGHT

ANGEL, LORNE AND SPIKE SIT AROUND ANGEL’S DESK, SPIKE TELLING THE OTHERS ABOUT CONNOR’S FUNERAL FOR CODY.

ANGEL
So he’s ok?

SPIKE
He’s tough, he’ll get through it. He said he wanted to be alone for a while, so I left.

ANGEL
You sure that’s safe? I mean, in the state he’s in –

SPIKE
He’s eighteen bloody years old, Angel! If he says he needs to be alone, he’s best left alone. So you’d damn-well better leave him alone!

EVERYONE SITS IN AN UNCOMFORTABLE SILENCE, NO ONE WANTING ST SPEAK. WES ENTERS THE OFFICE, HIS SHIRT STILL NOT COMPLETELY BUTTONED UP.

WES
Angel.

ANGEL
(standing)
Wes. How’d it go?

WES
(shaking his head)
Lilah knew what I was doing. She said she didn’t know anything, but I don’t believe her. She has something to hide.

ANGEL
Only now she knows that you suspect something. She’ll be watching us even more closely than ever.

WES
I’m sorry –

ANGEL
No, it’s not your fault. We just need to come up with a better plan.

LORNE
Like what? Lilah won’t let any of us close enough to her to spy on her.

ANGEL
No, not any of us…

WES
Maybe someone else?

SPIKE
Gunn?

ANGEL
No, he takes his job too seriously. There’s no guarantee he won’t tell Lilah what we’re up to.

WES
That leaves…

ANGEL
Fred.

LORNE
(sarcastically)
Well if anyone hates Councilor Crotch-infection, it’s Fred.
(beat)
Well hates her more than me, anyway.

EXT – LOS ANGELES STREET – NIGHT

CONNOR WANDERS THE STREETS, SLOWLY WALKING TO NOWHERE IN PARTICULAR. ACROSS THE STREET HE SEES A GROUP OF BOYS HIS AGE, ALL TALKING AND LAUGHING. CONNOR STOPS IN HIS TRACKS TO WATCH THEM WALK AWAY, LONGING TO BE JUST LIKE THEM. SORROW CLEARLY GLINTING IN HIS EYES, CONNOR CONTINUES TO WALK, NOT REALLY WATCHING WHERE HE’S GOING. ACCIDENTALLY HE WALKS INTO A MAN WHO WAS WALKING TOWARDS HIM.

MAN
Hey! Watch it, kid!!

AS THE MAN WALKS AWAY, CONNOR BARELY TURNS TO ACKNOWLEDGE HIM.

CONNOR
(distantly)
Sorry.

HE WALKS ABSENTLY UNTIL HE REALIZES THAT HE’S IN FAMILIAR TERRITORY. LOOKING AROUND HE SEES WHERE HE IS. AS THE CAMERA PANS AROUND HIM, WE SEE THAT HE HAS WANDERED BACK TO THE HYPERION.

EXT – LOS ANGELES PARK – NIGHT

ZACK STANDS NEAR A MASSIVE FOUNTAIN, STILL LOOKING AS IF HE IS PARANOID. STRIDING UP TO HIM IS GWEN, WHO LOOKS ALMOST AS RATTLED AS HER CLIENT. TAKING OUT THE FILE, SHE HANDS IT TO HIM AS SOON AS SHE REACHES HIM.

GWEN
(rushing her words)
Seems you were right, Clark was involved in Danny’s disappearance. And Wolfram & Hart is helping to cover it up.

ZACK
(reading the file)
This is perfect, thank you.
(looking up at her)
Thank you so much!!

GWEN
Don’t mention it. Just make sure the money is wired to the account number I gave you by tomorrow at midnight.

ZACK
Yes, of course. Thank you again, Gwen. But would it be possible for me to hire you again?

GWEN
(suspicious)
Sure. What’s the job?

ZACK
I’m going to hunt down Clark and make him pay, and I need you’re help.

GWEN
Out of the question. I steal, I’m not about killing. You shouldn’t be, either.

ZACK
(confused)
But he needs to pay!

GWEN
Then you charge him plus interest, sweetie, but I won’t help you. I have my own job to finish.

INT - WOLFRAM & HART HALLWAY – NIGHT

FRED STALKS DOWN THE HALLWAY, LOOKING AROUND HER FOR ANY WITNESSES AS SHE SNEAKS UP ON THE DOOR TO LILAH’S OFFICE. FINDING THE DOOR OPEN A CRACK, FRED PEEKS GINGERLY AROUND IT. THE CAMERA PANS AROUND TO REVEAL LILAH, GUNN AND CLARK HAVING A MEETING IN LILAH’S OFFICE.

CLARK
(to Lilah)
So your associate here has informed me that there’s been some breakthroughs?

LILAH
Yes, there has. In fact, just this morning our in-house scientists completed testing on an improved method to help you maintain your human form.

ANGEL, SPIKE AND WES ALL LOOK AT LORNE, SHAKING THEIR HEADS.

WES, FRED, LORNE, SPIKE AND GWEN SIT AROUND ANGEL’S DESK AS ANGEL WATCHES THE SUN BEGIN TO RISE.

GWEN
So can we get this over with? I’d kinda like to give my eye witness account then skedaddle.

I stole a file last night for a client. But while I was doing that I saw Gunn with that Mr. Clark guy. So I deliver the files and come back, just to see for myself what’s going on with Gunn. When I come back, he attacks me and nearly slits my throat.

FRED

GWEN
Does the word psychotic register?

FRED SHOOTS GWEN A DIRTY LOOK, WHICH GWEN RETURNS WITH A SMILE.

WES
I believe I may have a theory. Clark’s species of demon –

ANGEL
He was Garvian.
(pause)
Vampire. It’s a scent thing.

WES
Yes. Anyway, Garvians have the natural ability to control the personalities of humans they come in contact with.

SPIKE
So your boy was under the Smurf-demon’s control?

WES
Yes. Or at least suffering some lingering effects.

LORNE

WES
Gunn had much more contact with Clark than I did. It may be that his extended exposure created longer lasting effects.

ANGEL

CONNOR LAYS ON CODY’S BED, SOBBING AS HE LETS HIS MISERY SURFACE. THE CAMERA PULLS BACK, OUT THE WINDOW AND ACROSS THE STREET, WHERE A MAN IN BLACK COMMANDO GEAR IS TAKING PICTURES OF CONNOR FROM A ROOFTOP ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE HYPERION.

LILAH IS ON THE PHONE. WE DON’T SEE OR HEAR WHO IT IS, BUT LILAH LOOKS PLEASED WITH WHATEVER THE PERSON HAS TO SAY.
