LILAH STANDS IN FRONT OF KNOX AND FRED, HER ARMS CROSSED IN FRONT OF HER. SHE APPROACHES THEM SLOWLY.

LILAH
Knox, don’t you have somewhere else to be?

KNOX
(scared)
Uh, yes! Yes I do, thank you Ms. Morgan.

KNOX SCURRIES OUT THE DOOR, SHOOTING FRED AN APOLOGETIC LOOK. FRED NODS TO REASSURE HIM.

LILAH
That’s a good little science geek.
(stepping forward)
Not like you, though.

FRED
Lilah…

LILAH
Save it. So you played SpyGirl for Angel? Hope it was fun, because that was the last time that’ll happen.

FRED
What are you going to do?

LILAH
I’d love to have you terminated –

FRED
(shocked)

LILAH
(rolling her eyes)
Have you fired, you Texas Twit. But the kill idea wasn’t so bad.

FRED
So fire me and get it over with.

LILAH

FRED
The Senior Partners want me on staff?

LILAH
Not just you, your whole band of Super Friends. We want to keep you around, but don’t let that fool you into feeling secure. If you push me, I’ll make you wish I had the power to terminate you. Remember that.

LILAH TURNS ON HER HEEL, STORMING OUT OF THE LAB, LEAVING A CONFUSED AND STILL FRIGHTENED FRED TO WONDER WHY THE SENIOR PARTNERS WANT THEM ALL AT THE FIRM.

EXT – CLARK SHIPPING INDUSTRIES WAREHOUSE – NIGHT

ANGEL PULLS UP IN HIS CAR; WES, LORNE AND SPIKE ACCOMPANYING HIM.

SPIKE
You sure this is the right place?

ANGEL
Clark Shipping Industries, on the docks. It’s what the file said.

LORNE
So who’s gonna knock?

WITH A SCREAM, A MAN CRASHES THROUGH A WINDOW IN THE WAREHOUSE, LANDING OUTSIDE WITH A SICKENING THUD. WESLEY QUICKLY HOPS OUT OF THE CAR AND CHECKS THE MAN’S PULSE. IT IS ZACK.

WES
He’s dead.

ANGEL
(getting out of the car)
I think we’ll skip the knocking politely.

INT – SECURITY OFFICE – NIGHT

GWEN LOOKS AT THE SECURITY SCREENS, TRYING TO FIND OUT WHERE GUNN IS. SUDDENLY THE DOOR BEHIND HER OPENS, BANGING OFF OF THE TWO GUARDS SHE INCAPACITATED AND USED TO BARRICADE THE DOOR. THE DOOR IS PUSHED HARDER, SWINGING OPEN TO REVEAL GUNN.

GUNN
Looking for something.

GWEN
(smiling brightly)
Found something.

GUNN
I know. How is your client? He like the file you stole for him?

GWEN
(confused)
How did you –

GUNN
Know? Gwen, I am security around here. And you got that file because I let you. Clark wanted to smoke out whoever has been snooping in on him. I figured that file should do the trick.

GWEN
(realizing she was set up)
What about my client?

GUNN
I really doubt you can count on him needing your services ever again.
(pause)
What I want to know is; why would a thief return to the scene of her most recent crime?

GWEN
I had to see it for myself.

GUNN
See what?

GWEN
That you traded in your good guy tights for a handlebar mustache and a diabolical laugh.

GWEN SPINS AROUND, GIVING GUNN A KICK RIGHT IN THE CHEST. HE STAGGERS BACK, BUT DOESN’T FALL. TURNING BACK TO FACE HIM, GWEN IS GREETED WITH A WOODEN NIGHTSTICK HITTING HER IN THE FACE. GWEN STUMBLES TO THE FLOOR, HOLDING THE SIDE OF HER HEAD IN HER HANDS.

GUNN
Laugh this one off, Sparky.

INT – CLARK SHIPPING INDUSTRIES WAREHOUSE – NIGHT

THE DOOR TO THE WAREHOUSE IS KICKED OPEN, REVEALING ANGEL AND HIS TEAM, ALL ARMED WITH WEAPONS. CLARK STANDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EMPTY WAREHOUSE, MORE OF HIS SKIN RIPPED OFF TO REVEAL A SCALY BLUE HIDE. IT’S OBVIOUS ZACK PUT UP A FIGHT BEFORE HE WAS KILLED.

CLARK
Great. The kid hired mercs. Well it’s too late, your employer is dead, as you probably already know.

ANGEL
If this is Clark, I think I know why he wanted Fred’s serum.

WES
He isn’t human.

SPIKE
What tipped you off? Couldn’t have been the blue scales?

LORNE
(holding his crossbow shakily)
So what is he?

ANGEL
A wolf in sheep’s clothing.

ANGEL CHARGES, SWINGING HIS SWORD DOWN AT CLARK, WHO DODGES TO THE SIDE, LETTING THE SWORD’S END CLINK OFF THE CEMENT FLOOR. CLARK DEFTLY SNAPS THE BLADE WITH HIS FOOT BEFORE ANGEL CAN REACT, THEN UPPERCUTS THE VAMPIRE, SENDING HIM SAILING BACK TO LAND AT THE FEET OF HIS FRIENDS.

LORNE
That’s one tough wolf.

INT – SECURITY OFFICE – NIGHT

GWEN LAYS ON THE FLOOR, LOOKING UP AT GUNN WITH A MIX OF PAIN, FEAR AND ANGER. GUNN STANDS OVER HER, HOLDING HIS NIGHTSTICK MENACINGLY.

GWEN
Bite me, jackass!

GWEN KICKS OUT, HITTING GUNN DIRECTLY BETWEEN THE LEGS. HE DROPS THE NIGHTSTICK, HOLDING HIMSELF AND GWEN STANDS UP THEN PUSHES HIM OVER. SHE QUICKLY FLEES THE SECURITY OFFICE.

Cut To:

INT – WOLFRAM & HART HALLWAY – NIGHT

GWEN HOBBLES AS FAST AS SHE CAN, OBVIOUSLY DIZZY FROM GUNN’S ATTACK. SHE SEES THE DOOR THAT LEADS TO THE STAIRWELL AND TRIES TO MAKE HER WAY TO IT. GUNN APPEARS BEHIND HER AND GRABS HER ROUGHLY BY THE HAIR. AS SHE CRIES OUT IN FEAR AND PAIN, GUNN SNEERS.

GUNN
Now do you really think that was a smart thing to do?

GWEN
(struggling)
Let me go you bastard!

GUNN
You’re not going anywhere.

INT – CLARK SHIPPING INDUSTRIES WAREHOUSE – NIGHT

WITH ANGEL STILL LAYING ON THE FLOOR, WES AND SPIKE CHARGE AT CLARK, EACH OF THEM ARMED WITH AN AXE. CLARK DUCKS WES’ FIRST SWING, GRABBING THE AXE AND PULLING IT FREE FROM WES’ GRIP. CLARK SWINGS THE BLUNT END OF THE AXE AND KNOCKS WES TO THE FLOOR. HE TURNS JUST IN TIME TO BLOCK SPIKE’S SWING WITH THE AXE. BOTH SPIKE AND CLARK PUSH AT EACH OTHER, TRYING TO THROW THE OTHER OFF BALANCE.

SPIKE
(strained)
You planning on using that crossbow or is it just for show?

LORNE
(startled)
Sorry!

LORNE AIMS AND FIRES, JUST AS CLARK CHANGES HIS POSITION, LETTING SPIKE FALL INTO THE PATH OF THE ARROW. THE ARROW HITS SPIKE IN THE SHOULDER, CAUSING HIM TO DROP HIS AXE AND HE SCREAMS IN PAIN AND CRASHES TO THE FLOOR. CLARK TURNS TO LOOK AT LORNE, PREPARING TO LAUNCH HIS AXE AT LORNE.

WES
(off screen)
I wouldn’t if I were you.

CLARK TURNS TO SEE WES AIMING A HANDGUN AT HIM. SHRUGGING, CLARK PREPARES TO THROW THE AXE. WES FIRES TWICE, BOTH BULLETS HITTING CLARK IN THE ARM. THE AXE FALLS HARMLESSLY TO THE FLOOR AS CLARK REGARDS WES FIERCELY.

CLARK
I paid good money for this disguise, I don’t take kindly to those who try to shred it.

WES
(horrified)
A human suit to pass yourself off in our world.

ANGEL
(off screen)
That’s why he needs the serum.

EVERYBODY LOOKS AT ANGEL, WHO IS FINALLY STANDING UP. HE SHAKES OFF THE DISORIENTATION AND WALKS TOWARDS CLARK.

ANGEL
Your body started to reject the skin disguise, so you needed Wolfram & Hart to help you keep up the act.

CLARK
Of course it was already too late. Your employer’s brother found me while I was trying to reapply this mask. So I killed him just like I killed your boss just now.

WES
The man outside…

CLARK
Yes. He was the one who hired you lot to kill me?

ANGEL
We work for Wolfram & Hart.

CLARK
(relieved)
Oh, what a relief –

SPIKE SUDDENLY COMES TO AND KICKS OUT WITH HIS LEGS, SWEEPING CLARK OFF HIS FEET. AS CLARK CRASHES DOWN, SPIKE STANDS AND BACKS UP TO STAND NEXT TO ANGEL.

CLARK
Why do I get the feeling that the firm is terminating our contract?
(pause)
Oh well.

ANGEL MOVES TO ATTACK CLARK AGAIN, BUT HE IS STOPPED IN HIS TRACKS AS HE IS SHOT IN THE SHOULDER. THE CAMERA PANS AROUND TO REVEAL WES, WHO IS AIMING AT HIS FRIENDS, A TOTALLY BLANK LOOK ON HIS FACE.

ANGEL
Wes…?

WES SHOOTS AGAIN, THIS TIME DROPPING ANGEL TO THE FLOOR. AS SPIKE AND LORNE BACK AWAY IN CONFUSION, WES TURNS HIS AIM ON THEM.

INT – WOLFRAM & HART HALLWAY – NIGHT

GUNN STILL HAS GWEN HELD BY THE HAIR. SHE IS STRUGGLING TO BREAK FREE, BUT HE HAS HER IN A STRONG GRIP.

GWEN
What are you gonna do with me?

GUNN
I think it’s time I start tying up loose ends.

GWEN’S EYES WIDEN AS GUNN PULLS A KNIFE OUT OF A SHEATH ON HIS BELT AND HOLDS IT IN FRONT OF HER. REACTING QUICKLY, GWEN STOMPS ON GUNN’S FOOT, THEN USES HIS GRIP ON HER TO THROW HIM OVER HER SHOULDER. NOT LOOKING BACK, GWEN DARTS TO THE STAIRWELL AND ESCAPES THE BUILDING AS FAST AS SHE CAN.

INT – CLARK SHIPPING INDUSTRIES WAREHOUSE – NIGHT

AS WES FIRES AT LORNE, SPIKE PUSHES LORNE AND HIMSELF TO THE FLOOR. BEFORE WES CAN READJUST HIS AIM, SPIKE GRABS LORNE’S CROSSBOW AND HURLS IT AT WES, KNOCKING AWAY HIS GUN.

SPIKE
He’s using bloody mind control.

GRABBING ONE OF THE LOST AXES, WES APPROACHES SPIKE AND LORNE. GROANING, SPIKE GETS UP AND LAUNCHES HIMSELF AT WES, KNOCKING THEM BOTH TO THE FLOOR. AS LORNE WATCHES THE SCUFFLE, CLARK WALKS UP BESIDE HIM. CLARK LEANS OVER, GRABBING LORNE BY THE NECK, LIFTING HIM INTO THE AIR.

CLARK
Doesn’t it make you sick? That we’re the outcasts simply because we don’t look like them?

LORNE
Not really. What really makes me sick is that low-class plastic surgery job you’re sporting.

WITH A GROWL, LORNE REACHES UP AND GRABS AT CLARK’S FACE, PULING OFF HIS HUMAN MASK. WITH A SCREAM, CLARK FLINGS LORNE AWAY, CRADLING HIS FLAYED MASK GENTLY. LORNE LOOKS UP FROM WHERE HE’S LANDED, SEEING CLARK DESPERATELY TRYING TO PET HIS FACE BACK TOGETHER. GIVING UP, CLARK RIPS THE DISGUISE OFF COMPLETELY, REVEALING A GROTESQUE BLUE DEMON UNDERNEATH. IT IS CLEAR WHY HE CHOSE TO HIDE BEHIND A MASK; CLARK’S TRUE FORM IS UGLY, WITH PURPLISH VEINS WEBBING HIS SKIN BETWEEN THE PATCHWORK OF SCABBY BLUE SCALES.

CLARK
You will pay for this!!

ANGEL
(off screen)
I’ll be sure to leave a tip.

CLARK TURNS TO SEE ANGEL HOLDING THE SECOND AXE. WITH A SMIRK ANGEL BRINGS THE AXE DOWN, DECAPITATING CLARK. AS HIS HEAD ROLLS AWAY, HIS HEADLESS BODY FALLS LIMPLY TO THE GROUND. AS SOON AS CLARK IS KILLED, WES AND SPIKE STOP FIGHTING, CLARK’S SPELL ON WES BROKEN.

LORNE
(smugly)
And the tip is: you don’t need to pretend to be human to fit in around here.
(pause)
Unless you’re evil. Then you get killed.

ANGEL, SPIKE AND WES ALL LOOK AT LORNE, SHAKING THEIR HEADS.

INT – ANGEL’S OFFICE – NEAR DAWN

WES, FRED, LORNE, SPIKE AND GWEN SIT AROUND ANGEL’S DESK AS ANGEL WATCHES THE SUN BEGIN TO RISE.

GWEN
So can we get this over with? I’d kinda like to give my eye witness account then skedaddle.

ANGEL
So tell us what happened.

GWEN
(sighing)
I stole a file last night for a client. But while I was doing that I saw Gunn with that Mr. Clark guy. So I deliver the files and come back, just to see for myself what’s going on with Gunn. When I come back, he attacks me and nearly slits my throat.

FRED
Why would he do that?

GWEN
Does the word psychotic register?

FRED SHOOTS GWEN A DIRTY LOOK, WHICH GWEN RETURNS WITH A SMILE.

WES
I believe I may have a theory. Clark’s species of demon –

ANGEL
He was Garvian.
(pause)
Vampire. It’s a scent thing.

WES
Yes. Anyway, Garvians have the natural ability to control the personalities of humans they come in contact with.

SPIKE
So your boy was under the Smurf-demon’s control?

WES
Yes. Or at least suffering some lingering effects.

LORNE
Then why are you not shooting us all right now?
(pause)
Not that I’m disappointed.

WES
Gunn had much more contact with Clark than I did. It may be that his extended exposure created longer lasting effects.

ANGEL
So we wait. Gunn’ll be back to himself soon.

GWEN
(speaking up)
Yeah, and until then, I’m outta this town.

FRED
Let me know if you need help packing your bags.

GWEN
I’ll miss you, too, babe.

ANGEL
I think now’s a good time to go while you still can. Not just Gwen, everybody. To say that the Senior Partners are planning something is a bit redundant. But now we know that they want us close for a reason. I want to know what that reason is. So we watch, we listen, and most importantly, we stick together. So if anyone wants to run, go now. Because things are only going to get rougher from here on out.

THE CAMERA PANS AROUND THE GROUP. WES LOOKS STOIC, SPIKE LOOKS UNCARING BUT DEFIANT, FRED LOOKS SCARED BUT DETERMINED, LORNE LOOKS ALMOST HAPPY TO BE THERE AND GWEN LOOKS REALLY BORED. GWEN STANDS SUDDENLY.

GWEN
(impatient)
Is that it? Cuz if it is, I’m so out of here.

INT – HYPERION – DAY

CONNOR LAYS ON CODY’S BED, SOBBING AS HE LETS HIS MISERY SURFACE. THE CAMERA PULLS BACK, OUT THE WINDOW AND ACROSS THE STREET, WHERE A MAN IN BLACK COMMANDO GEAR IS TAKING PICTURES OF CONNOR FROM A ROOFTOP ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE HYPERION.

INT – LILAH’S OFFICE – DAY

LILAH IS ON THE PHONE. WE DON’T SEE OR HEAR WHO IT IS, BUT LILAH LOOKS PLEASED WITH WHATEVER THE PERSON HAS TO SAY.

LILAH
This is excellent news. Thank you for the report. Stay in position and notify me of any changes in the target’s location.

HANGING UP, LILAH DIALS A NEW NUMBER, A LOOK OF ACCOMPLISHMENT ACROSS HER FACE.

LILAH
Yes. Mr. Wolfram? It seems there’s a development on Angel’s son.
(pause)
Yes, sir. Connor is back in Los Angeles.
