VAMPIRE'S LAIR
WES
Lilah? Are you up?
LILAH
In the kitchen
Wesley gives her a big hug and kiss and twirls her around.
WES
I was amazing. You should have been there. They don't have a clue without me.
LILAH
Hey, you have fresh blood on your lips. Is this how it's going to be for all eternity? You off taunting your old friends while I'm stuck here. You don't even bring home something to share.
WES
I thought we might go out to eat. You up for a little mid-day slaughter.
LILAH
Hmm, a slaughter of innocents.
WES
I'm not sure how innocent they are, but I suspect they'll be a few helpless women and children in the mix.
LILAH
Too bad the Watcher's Council isn't around to chronicle our exploits.
WES
Perhaps we'll have to write our own history.
LILAH
I'll get my coat.
ONE HOUR LATER
FRED/WILLOW'S APARTMENT
Angel is distressed as he paces back and forth.
ANGEL
Gone?
WlLLOW
Five minutes ago. I was monitoring the 911 calls and it just popped up.
ANGEL (to Spike)
You didn't try to stop him!
SPIKE
Bloody hell, he heard the news and said he was gonna be sick. I didn't expect him to jump out of a second story bloody bathroom window.
ANGEL
And why you didn't you go after him?
WILLOW
Angel, it's not Spike's fault. We all agreed to wait till you got here. You thought Wes would try to get to you through Connor, but we didn't consider he would go after the one thing in Connor's life that makes him feel important. Besides, this could be a trick to separate the whole group by getting all of us running around looking for Connor.
SPIKE
Yeah, what she said. Plus, you had my umbrella. Hey, where is my umbrella?
FRED
It's like a chess game trying to keep a step ahead of Wesley.
ANGEL
King's gambit.
FRED
What?
ANGEL
It was something Lorne said. Wes was playing a famous chess match over in his head.
...pause
Alright, I'm going after Connor, but please tell me you found something out about Monkeypod.
WILLOW
Some good news there. It's a tree native to South America, but known in the United States as the Raintree. I found a news article about Mark Raintree who lives in the valley. He's been fighting the power company for years. The power company claimed eminent domain. They want to put a high tension power line right through his property, which would require them to cut down a one hundred year old raintree. He lost the battle as the tree was cut down the day the rain started. It's got to be connected. I want to go there and look around, maybe I can talk to this Raintree guy.
ANGEL
Ok, good. You check that out and I'll see if I can bring back Connor before he does something stupid. Do you want Spike to go with you?
WILLOW
No offence Spike, but I can travel faster alone.
SPIKE
So I stay here again then.....with Fred and Tibby.
ANGEL
Where is Tibby?
FRED
She's in my room. All this has hit her pretty hard.
FADE OUT
MOMENTS LATER
L.A. - SUBURBIA
The rain continues to fall as Willow emerges from the clouds floating to the ground Mary Poppins style.
WILLOW (to herself)
I always wanted to do that.
It's clear this is the place she's looking for. The house has been demolished and a large tree still lays on the ground. It's branches have been pruned and the trunk has been cut into four foot sections. As she starts to look around, a voice calls out from a screened in porch of the house across the street.
MAN
You're a lot prettier than the other one.
WILLOW
The other one?
MAN
Reporter. British sounding guy. I was surprised to see anyone still interested. Bunch of vultures, camped out here for a year and as soon as the tree was gone, so were they.
WILLOW
This other guy, what did he say?
MAN
Oh, he was just poking around like you are doing. Took a piece of tree limb with him. Wanted to know all about Tree. That's what I called Mark. He looked kinda like a tree. Tall and lanky with shaggy hair. His grandfather planted that tree when this area was nothing more than a forrest of trees. Now there are nothing but homes and those bastards cut down every tree to make more power for more homes.
WILLOW
Do you know where I can find this tree fella? I'd like to talk to him.
MAN
That might be hard. The day they came to cut down the tree, he chained himself to it. They cut him loose, and then he started ranting and raving about the end of the world. Took him away to the crazy wing at the county hospital strapped to a stretcher. Bastards!
meanwhile.....
Cut To:
HOMELESS SHELTER
The police have cordoned off the street in front of the shelter so that as one ambulance leaves with bodies, another can take it's place. Connor tries to get a look of what's going on, but his view is blocked by onlookers and their umbrellas.
When he goes around to the back of the building, he picks up Wesley's scent. A couple of streets down he turns into a narrow alley. The rain is only a light mist because of the tightness of the buildings. Wesley stands at the far end as if waiting for Connor. When Connor sees Wes, he pulls out a stake and rushes towards him. Using his knowledge of magics and the boost from Willow, Wes holds Connor at bay with a wave of his hand.
WES
Straight to the fight and nothing to say?
CONNOR
Release me! All everybody wants to do is talk. That time is over.
WES
Ah, but words can hurt the most.
With his other hand, Wesley commands a trash can at Connor sending him flying.
WES
Well, maybe not. Did that hurt?
Connor struggles to his feet, but before he can get set, he gets hit with another trash can.
WES
This is fun, well maybe not for you. I know how you dislike magic.
This time Wes sends Connor flying against a wall. And then again against the other wall of the alley, this time knocking Connor out. Concentrating hard, Wes levitates Connor's now limp body and pulls him in close.
ANGEL (from off screen)
I always knew a little power would go straight to your head.
Wes turns to see Angel standing at the mouth of the alley.
WES
Just as a little power went straight to your heart.
ANGEL
This isn't about Conner; it's about you and me.
WES
Always the hero, but it's not always about the hero now is it?
ANGEL
It's time we settle this.
WES
Haven't you learned by now that time has no meaning when you're immortal? But you're right, this is getting tiresome.
With a flip of his hand, Wes sends Connor flying into Angel knocking him to the ground. When Angel raises up holding onto an unconscious Connor, Wes is nowhere in sight.
Cut To:
L.A. COUNTY HOSPITAL
Willow is at the receptionist desk.
WILLOW
Can you tell me if you have admitted Mark Raintree?
NURSE
Are you a relative?
Willow pulls an imaginary wallet out of her pocket and flashes it as if it were a badge.
NURSE
Let me check the records detective.
Pause
NURSE
Yes, he's here, but I'm afraid you won't be able to talk to him.
WILLOW
This is a criminal investigation. I have a court order.
NURSE
Oh, it's not that. Mr. Raintree passed away last night. Initial report says it was from complete heart failure. He's in the hospital morgue awaiting a full autopsy.
WILLOW
Thank you.
Willow turns to consider her next move when she sees the double automatic doors to the emergency room open and Angel comes in carrying Connor. The nurse rushes out from behind the counter.
NURSE
What happened?
ANGEL
He's unconscious. He may have some broken bones.
NURSE
Bring him into X-ray room 2.
FADE OUT
FADE BACK IN
Some moments Later
Angel and Willow stand talking to a doctor at the door to Connor's hospital room.
DOCTOR
That's one strong boy you have. He's got a slight concussion and a couple of bruised ribs, but he's going to be fine.
WILLOW
Thank you, doctor
DOCTOR
I'll check back in on him when I do my rounds.
Connor begins to regain consciousness and bolts up in his bed only to lay back down from the pain in his head. Angel goes over to comfort him.
ANGEL
Easy son. You're safe here. Do I need to tell you how stupid that was?
CONNOR
What happened to Wesley?
ANGEL
He got away. You rest now, I need to talk to Willow about what she found out.
Angel and Willow begin to leave the room, but Connor calls out to Willow.
CONNOR
Willow?
WILLOW
Yes sweety.
CONNOR
You've got some thing growing out of your pants.
Willow twists to see the piece of the raintree she had picked up is now a small sapling tree growing out her back pocket.
WILLOW
I picked up a twig from the raintree that was cut down. The neighbor told me Wes had been there asking questions and took a piece of the tree with him. It's growing, but I don't think I'm doing it.
ANGEL
Wes is getting sloppy. I'm surprised he didn't feed from the neighbor.
WILLOW
I asked about that. The man said he knew better than to invite him in.
ANGEL
He knew Wes was a vampire?
WILLOW
Reporter. He didn't like reporters much.
A commotion in the hallway gets their attention. Two orderlies are wheeling a very pregnant woman down the hall. A nurse tries to calm the woman down.
NURSE
It's going to be alright honey.
REBECCA
You don't understand! I can't have my baby here; the world depends on it!
NURSE
We have the best care available I assure you. Your baby is coming and there's nothing we can do to stop nature, Ms. Raintree.
Angel and Willow give each other a look when they here the name Raintree.
WILLOW
I'm on it!
Willow follows them into the delivery room. Ms. Rebecca Raintree sees Willow carrying the sapling raintree.
REBECCA
Oh thank god!
NURSE (to Willow)
I'm sorry miss, but unless you're a relative you'll have to leave.
Willow uses magic to hypnotise the hospital workers and in a gentle but firm voice replies.
WILLOW
There are other patients that need you.
The doctor and nurses leave.
REBECCA
How did you....do you know about the raintree?
WILLOW
I think I'm starting to understand.
REBECCA
We are the Raintree. We are the keepers. My baby will continue the line.
WILLOW
I think I can help. I have given birth to potentials before.
Close in on Willow as she calls on the goddess of the earth. Her hair goes fiery red and then returns slightly lighter than her natural color. Pan down to Ms. Raintree and she is now holding a bundled up baby girl.
WILLOW
She's beautiful. What are you going to call her?
REBECCA
Wow, that was a lot easier than I thought it would be. What's your name?
WILLOW
Willow
REBECCA
Willow Raintree, I like the sound of that. We have to hurry. We need to plant the tree you brought and consecrate the ground.
WILLOW
I know just the place.
Using a wheelchair, Willow rolls Ms. Raintree and her newborn out of the room and past Angel and Connor's room.
WILLOW
Angel, I need to use your car.
Angel toses her his keys and watches as the sprinkler heads of the hospital's fire protection system go off in sequence as Willow and company leave the hospital.
Cut To:
WILTON MANSION
Willow plants the sapling raintree in the backyard garden as Ms. Rebecca stands near holding an umbrella in one hand and her newborn cradled in the other.
REBECCA
We are the keepers of the Raintree. We give back to mother earth and pledge we shall watch over you and ask that you will watch over us.
Willow takes the umbrella and with her arm around Rebecca; they stand and watch as the rain turns to a mist. The clouds disappear as the sun emerges on the horizon. Sun light filters through the other trees in the garden and when it reaches the raintree; it appears to be glowing.
FADE OUT
EPILOGUE
WILTON MANSION - AFTERNOON
Willow, Connor, Spike, Angel, Fred, and Tibby are all gathered in the living room around Rebecca and her newborn.
WILLOW
It's all settled. I spoke to Mrs. Wilton this morning.
FRED
South of France?
WILLOW
She's on a cruise to Italy. Ship to shore radio. Anyway, (to Rebecca) she couldn't be happier for you to stay here. She's very excited to have a baby in the house again. You can expect to start receiving lots of packages in the mail. She said she can't wait to hit the duty free baby shops. I also called the Coven and they are working on making the entire property a safe haven.
(pause)
There is one problem though. You're gonna need help taking care of your baby....
TIBBY
I could do that.
WILLOW
I was hoping you would say that, but I didn't want to speak for you.
FRED
It looks like everything turned out just right.
ANGEL
We got lucky. The prophesy says plagues and pestilence are a sign of the end of days. Plus now we've got Wes in our way with every move.
FRED
I think Wes was helping.
CONNOR
You call killing a bunch of homeless people helping!
FRED
Well, in a twisted vampire way. I think he was giving us clues to the Raintree all along. I looked up the King's Gambit chess match you said Wes was using to block Lorne from reading him. It was made famous by Bobby Fisher. He said he could defend against anyone who used it, but later, he 'switched sides', as he began using the opening gambit himself. It involves sacrificing your own pieces in the beginning, in order to put yourself in a better position for the end.
SPIKE
So you're saying a vampire without a soul helped save the world. Are there any prophesies about that?
FADE OUT
The ME stick figure demon crosses the screen, in the rain, carrying Spike's Disneyland cartoon character umbrella.
grrr..arrg!
