It was sad that the customary presentations were unable to be made to the three soloists on the Last Night. This was due to the BBC backstage representative totally underestimating the length of time that the audience would continue to clap.

This disappointed not only the many Promenaders who so generously contributed specifically for these gifts, along with those who organised all aspects of the presentations, but also, of course, the Prommers of long-standing who had been chosen to go on stage and had been eagerly anticipating being able to represent all those in the Arena.

I understand that the gifts were duly placed in the soloists dressing rooms.

I sincerely hope that, as audience reaction is quite unable to be gauged accurately and there have been a number of near misses in the past, in future years the presenters are allowed to go on stage within seconds of the applause starting. Why has it become the custom to wait until the artist takes a second bow?
