I have just heard and read the ammendments to the Last Night and I am now quite satisfied that it meets my original objections to indulging in any kind of patriotic partying in these tragic times which would have been totally inappropriate. While we could have finished on the Friday with the Verdi Requiem, I feel that the changes made to the Last Night will now reflect our sympathy and solidarity with our American cousins in their hour of sadness, something that music is so good at doing. I seem to remember that someone said music is "the greatest good that mortals know and all the Heaven we have below". I commend the BBC and all concerned with their sensitive handling of a difficult situation
