Pavel is a great player, maybe the games best scorer, but for those who insist the he is the best player in the game, you are severely misguided. He is my favorite NHL player, but that doesnt mean that I can't find fault with some of his actions. Its frustrating to hear people say he is the best, he is god, etc. he is NOT. But he is a great hockey player, just not the best.
As far as being a captain. Pavel will never where the C for the Rangers, he simply does not have what it takes to be a captain. He has improved his defensive play since coming to the rangers, but he still is not nearly responsible enough in his own end. But thats not necessarily bad, that doesnt make him any less of a great player. Look at a guy like Chris Chelios- a great, hall of fame, NHL defenseman- he is a defensive player- some guys do it in the Dzone some do it in the Ozone- but captains are responsible for the actions all over the ice. THEY HAVE TO BE, they have to be accountable for all their mistakes, if they are not, then no one else should be held accountable. Pavel locker room demeanor is not suited to be a captain either- despite all the crazy rumors of him not sitting in the dressing room and rushing out after games, which are NOT all true, he still is too reserved to wear the C. And no one will where the c for the rangers while messier is around, then leetch, then lindros, and then malakhov behind them.
Is Pavel a great player yes. That does not mean he is made to be a captain..
