I looked Professor Julius Sumner Miller up and found his Wikipedia entry.

You're correct in remembering him on WQED. He had a syndicated science show that many public stations carried. But, he's not the same guy as Francis Alder, who was the host of the local classroom education TV show I was asking about. You're also correct about him being very entertaining.

He was one of many TV science show hosts of the era, including the dean of them all, Don "Mr. Wizard" Herbert. As a group, their the inspiration for the "Professor Proton" character that Bob Newhart played on The Big Bang Theory".
