Subject: Re: 13Q song survey
In reply to: JohnF 's message, "13Q song survey" on 19:02:04 06/25/12 Mon

A comparison of 13Q's survey to KQV's survey for the same week shows the following songs in the top 20 of 13Q's survey but not on KQV's top 30: Smoke on the Water (12), Shambala (14), I'm Gonna Love You (17) and Will it Go Round in Circles (18). The following songs were in the top 20 of KQV's survey but not on 13Q's top 35: I'm Doing Fine by New York City (12), And I Love You So by Perry Como (15), Wildflower by Skylark (18) and Ain't No Woman by The Four Tops (19). Also, 13Q's survey ncluded Danny's Song by Loggins and Messina, while KQV had the same song on their survey, but by Anne Murray.

It could be deduced that by looking at which songs were included or left off each survey, that the new 13Q was appealing to a younger audience. This was verified in the Apr-May 1973 ratings that showed that in the 18-49 age group, KQV was second in the ratings, while 13Q was fourth. But in the 12-17 age group, 13Q was first while KQV was third (behind KDKA). However, adults were slowing catching on to the "Q" sound. By July, 13Q was second in the 18-49 age group, while KQV slipped to fourth. By 1979, "13Q" was gone, replaced by an older sounding "1320 WKTQ".
