It’s funny that my strongest memory of Bill Brady involves golf…and Dave James. I had only been working in master control for two days (as a scab during the 1973 engineer’s strike) when Bill called over on the intercom for me to take a phoner from Dave, who was covering the US Open at Oakmont Country Club. Dave was calling in every hour with the latest report, which we would “cart up” and deliver to the newsroom for the hourly newscast. Well, somehow, that recording got lost. Either the phone call dropped, or I didn’t hit record, or something. Bill came in, exasperated with me, that I had missed this feed. He explained to me how the process worked, and that what we did was important, and that we didn’t make mistakes like that at KDKA. I never missed a feed after that, and Bill didn’t hold my mistake against me. He did make it clear that day that he had definite expectations about how his newsroom was to be run, and that I would be meeting them. That was 39 years ago,and I still remember it like it was yesterday. RIP Bill.
