This was a problem until EBS became EAS with the two-tone signal. Everyone's EBS within 50 miles was tuned to KDKA, and if the transmitter dumped, the engineering phone line would light up with stations calling to see if we sent an EBS test. The EBS monitors were only supposed to open up if there were TWO carrier breaks (5 seconds off, 5 on, 5 off, back on followed by message). However, most of the Miravox? EBS boxes would just open up on a single carrier drop. Kept us busy answering the phones if a thunderstorm was in the area. A lightning strike within 30 miles would cause the Gates MW-50 to drop carrier, as its VSWR circuit would cycle the transmitter off and back on to protect it. After a few of these, we would crank up the Westinghouse transmitter, as it didn't care about lightning storms.
