Interesting story. I guess it's possible they were looking to replace Mike Levine in 6 to 9, as they would within two years.

But the urgent need was for 9 to midnight. "Party Line" ended with Ed King's passing in November of 1971. They filled the time with music through the rest of the calendar year, then launched a "nice guy" talk show hosted by Jim Jeffrey in early '72. Jeffrey got a year, but the show wasn't successful and they dumped it in early '73. That was around the same time the WJAS/13Q transition was happening, and Cigna was a free agent. PD Alan Mitchell contacted him about working at KDKA, at least on a part-time basis. He said yes, and that was the beginning of a run that took him to retirement.

The other story Cigna told was his master plan was to go the San Francisco in '73. He figured he could work at KDKA for the summer, make some money, and head west in time for the kids to start school in September. Instead, the KDKA show was a hit and he spent the rest of his life in Pittsburgh.
