Freberg had his moments but his later stuff did indeed stink. He struck me as a jazz guy who hated corny pop songs like "Yellow Rose of Texas" and had an old fart's contempt for rock and roll. He mocked "Great Pretender" and "Heartbreak Hotel" on record. But he also recorded one gem: "Wunnerful! Wunnerful!" a searingly nasty Lawrence Welk parody. The Welk band was re-created in all its awful glory by none other than the legendary big band arranger and ex-Pittsburgher Billy May, who combined his flair for satire with his scorn for Welk's cornball music.

Welk, it's said, was not amused.
