All those musicians who worked with Freberg including May and the vocal group Jud Conlon Rhythmaires, plus June Foray, Peter Leeds and Daws Butler, were incredibly talented. May booked some of the best jazz players in L.A. for the Freberg sessions and they LOVED tearing up Welk. He met Stan one time and bitched he never said "Wunnerful! Wunnerful!" but that was the title of Welk's autobiography.

I read somewhere Buck Owens even played guitar on some of the Freberg rock spoofs.
