Like Ed, I found out about it only the following morning, so don't know how it was handled locally that night. According to Wikipedia, Howard Cosell broke into a football game on ABC-TV to announce it. Also from Wikipedia: "On 14 December 1980, millions of people around the world responded to [Yoko] Ono's request to pause for ten minutes of silence to remember Lennon. ... For those ten minutes every radio station in New York City went off the air." I know 13Q also did so, because I was listening; it came at the end of a newscast. (Technically, the carrier remained on, but with silence for ten minutes.)

For my part, I remember the first of my Thursday night programs at WYEP after Lennon's death consisted entirely of John Lennon records (Beatles and solo) segued together, broken only by a legal ID each hour. I felt anything I could have said would have been pointless and gauche.
