>Why did 13q do so much damage to KQV so fast?

There was a combination of factors. KQV was #1 with the teenagers who graduated in the classes up to 1970. A lot of the KQV kids who graduated in the classes of '66, '67. '68, '69, and '70 "graduated" to the new WDVE. The kids who were in Middle School in KQV's glory years saw KQV as yesterday's news. When they got older and entered high school, they found 13-Q to be fresh and new.

KQV tried to grow with their audience and sound more "mature", but they were stuck with a monaural, static-filled AM signal and their former teen fans wanted to hear music in stereo on clear FM. The result was that the kid who listened to KQV while watching the submarine races when he was 17 back in 1969 was listening to WDVE when he turned 21 four years later. That kid's little brother who was in 8th grade in 1969 didn't want his big brother's lame old 60's top-40 station. When that kid turned 17, he wanted a new, 70's Top 40 station -- 13-Q.

Folks will claim it was jingle packages or imaging or some such thing, but the truth is that KQV was totally perceived as the pop radio station of the 60's. It was up their with Nehru jackets, love beads, and headbands. When the 60's died, and the 70's took over, KQV went into the same shoebox on the shelf as the tie-dyed t-shirts and the pink lensed granny glasses, and 45 rpm single records.
