There was an advertising campaign in the late 1940s or so, the theme of which was: "More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette."

Don't forget, too, cigarette advertising wasn't pulled from TV and radio until the beginning of 1971. I remember the tobacco companies bought every single TV network availability the last night they were allowed to advertise.

If you really want something ironic, I have an ashtray from an American Cancer Society convention, probably from the late 1940s or early 1950s, before the first reports of smoking's dangers came out in the mass media. It has the ACS logo imprinted on it.
