The outlawing of cigarette advertising may have been a good thing for public health, but it was a terrible thing for local radio and television. Those ads meant survival for a lot of local, independent stations.

The unforgettable first four notes of Elmer Bernstein's theme from the Magnificent Seven stir my soul, and those Marlboro commercials were among the most effective ever made. But my admiration is tempered by the knowledge that smoking killed my father, my aunt, and the Marlboro Man who starred in many of those commercials.
