Very effective fund-raiser for Children's Hospital and a gold-plated promotion for KDKA.

The story I heard was when KDKA first contacted the three stores and proposed the idea, they were turned down by all three. The stores didn't want to give up a window at the height of the retail season. Then one of the three had a change of heart and said KDKA could use the window for three days. This was in 1969.

So KD took the offer and set up in the window. The stores quickly realized that the store's name was being mentioned about 20 times an hour, and that the remotes would help build traffic to the store. There was also the positive rub of being part of fund raising for what was then one of the region's most beloved charities. All three stores were back on the phone to KDKA, wanting to be part of it. In 1970, they started the three-week rotation that lasted in some form until the early '90s.

Hard to believe now, but they didn't have an outside microphone for the first couple of years. Eventually they added that, and it was a whole new element.

There were stations in other markets who sent people to Pittsburgh to study the whole process to see if it could be adapted. I don't know if other places did it, but it was a huge part of KDKA for a long time. It was a great idea and well executed.
