As I recall, the "first incarnation" of Channel 53 was a totally different operation, run by a totally different company than the outfit who got the license for that station later. It's like when the Post-Gazette bought the printing presses from the Pittsburgh Press when the Press went under.

WPGH is a great set of call letters for a Pittsburgh station, I'm surprised one of the VHF stations hadn't grabbed them.

As I recall, the station sort of limped along on syndicated reruns and the many first-run syndicated programs available back in those early days, before basic cable networks like E!, TNT, etc., came along. When Pittsburgh finally got cable TV to solve the over-the-air antenna reception problems that plagued all local stations, and then the Fox network came along in October of '86, suddenly WPGH became a pretty successful operation.

How many of you remember the very first station on Channel 53, WKJF-TV? It was on from 1953 to 1954, only 13 months! The second station on the channel, the first WPGH, was only on from February 1969 to August 1971.
