Pittsburgh was perhaps the best crossover market in the nation. It really started with Porky, who had a wide audience appeal. All those white kids who listened to the Daddio of the Raddio got to know Little Richard before they heard those Pat Boone covers. They knew and loved Bo Diddley and Hank Ballard long before most of the country. And the jocks on KQV, WEEP, and KDKA responded when the kids demanded they play those black artists - including at record hops.

Also, with Pittsburgh being the "Paris of Appalachia," there was more C&W music played on 'burgh stations than in many major markets. Patsy Cline, Skeeter Davis, Jim Reeves, and Ferlin Husky could also be heard on the same stations that played Richard and Bo and Li'l Stevie.

It all started with Porky, and it made for great radio listening in the day.
