The P-G obit scoots by the story of the sit-in protest, which is worth retelling.

Here's how Nick told it:

He had just finished producing "You're The One," which, incidentally, was the only Vogues hit done entirely in Pittsburgh. The Fenways cut the instrumental track, and the Vogues sang. Nick took the record over to KDKA. Clark Race listened to it, shrugged and said, "I don't hear it, but I'll play it and see what kind of reaction we get."

Then he took it to KQV. PD John Rook listened and declined to add the record. Nick then announced he was staging a sit-in protest until John added the record. (Sit-ins were a big deal in those days, with college students sometimes occupying the administrative offices as a means of protest).

Nick sat there reading magazines while John went about his business. After a certain period of time, John said, "OK, I'll add your record." To which Nick said, "Now I'm going to sit here until you make it the pick hit of the week." And the sit-in continued.

Per the chart archive at Jeff Roteman's KQV Tribute website, "You're The One" debuted at No. 29 on the Aug. 3-9 KQV Finest Forty. It moved slowly but steadily up the chart, peaking at No. 3 on the Sept. 28-Oct. 4 survey. Its start in Pittsburgh led to national success, and launched The Vogues' career.

On KDKA's chart (50 records), "You're The One" debuted at No. 40 on Aug. 2-9. It peaked at No. 2 on Sept. 13-19, trailing only the No. 1 tie between "Catch Us If You Can" by the Dave Clark Five and We Five's "You Were On My Mind."
