Karl Hardman told the story that he had fooled around with the Louie voice behind the scenes, but that Rege wouldn't let him use it on the air. He was certain they'd get complaints from people who would be offended. The other guys kept asking him to use it on the show, and Rege reluctantly relented and prepared for protests. Instead, Louie became the show's most popular character and probably the one who's best remembered.

Rege Cordic noted that they never assigned an ethnicity to Louie, which was probably a smart move. The Polish people could laugh at the crazy Serbian garbageman, etc. No group ever claimed him as their own.

One final trivia note: Karl Hardman said the Louie voice came from a guy he knew in Verona named Joe. Karl rented a garage from Joe for his custom furniture business. Karl was one of those people with a gift for dialects. He could listen to someone for a few minutes, then imitate their speech. So Louie was really Joe, who worked at the Verona Foundry.
