In early days of Top 40 especially, some radio stations owned the names they gave the jocks, and when one "Johnny Dark" (or whatever) would quit, another "Johnny Dark" would take his place. This kept the jock from capitalizing on his success and poaching listeners if he went to the competition. (Not to mention saving on the cost of new jingles.) One example was WMEX in Boston, where a succession of jocks appeared as "Fenway," "Melvin X. Melvin" and "Dan Donovan." (The jock known at WLS as J.J. Jeffrey was both "Fenway" and "Melvin" on WMEX at different times.)

The only instance of this I can remember in Pittsburgh was that there were two successive jocks using the name "Franklin B. Forbes" on KQV in the late 1960s.
