I stumbled across this forum AFTER talking to my MD about a possible Prozac/weight gain connection. Like so many others I read about in these messages, I gained and lost (but mostly gained) to the tune of 30 lbs. since starting on Prozac. The good news, however, is that the Prozac did WONDERS for my depression.
Fortunately, my doctor not only did not laugh at the idea, but said that the connection has definitely been shown and has switched me to Wellbutrin. He had me do it gradually over several weeks, taking low doses of both for a week, then increasing my dosage of Wellbutrin while stopping Prozac. I have another appointment 3.5 weeks after the initial visit to talk about the change in medication and how things are going. After two weeks, I have not missed the Prozac and feel great on the Wellbutrin. Hopefully, the weight will gradually come off with a combination of Weight Watchers (which I highly recommend) and exercise.
For those of you who have mentioned quitting "cold turkey" and trying other remedies...here's my concern. If you truly suffer from depression, I think that changing any medication on your own is a very bad idea. As my doctor explained, depression is a chemical imbalance that is easily treated with medication...and if one does not work for you, try another! He reassured me that Prozac is not usually difficult to "come off of" if done gradually, but other anti-depressants (like Paxil) are known to be difficult to wean off of. Your doctor should know all of this. If you feel that your doctor is completely unresponsive to your concerns about weight gain and Prozac, find another doctor!
