Last week was Harvard freshman parents weekend. The entire freshman class and families are served an indoor lunch at the Gordon track adjacent to the stadium. The only entrance/exit is 40 yeards from the turnstiles. Almost have to make a conscious effort to avoid attending.

Do you really believe the published attendance was the actual attendance? I know a number of season ticket holders (like me)do not actually attend every game. Mrs. Bear has a ticket she hasn't used in a great while.

There are no "athletic scholarships" - full or otherwise. There is need-based financial aid available to all students - pretty much the same amounts at Harvard, Yale and Princeton. The aid is generous - to a slightly lesser degree - at other Ivies, which are free to match financial aid offered by Harvard, Yale or Princeton.

To be fair, financial aid was only standardized across different Ivies back in the old days before the consent decree.

Post-decree, each Ivy can evaluate and award financial aid in any manner that it wants. We read from time to time about students who appeal their initial awards successfully, getting a bigger check from their school.

Furthermore and specific to Harvard, the basketball coach makes more than a million dollars a year. Construction will soon start on an arena costing tens of millions. Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that which is obvious to any Ivy fan, that Harvard is 100% committed to becoming a basketball "powerhouse," the ostensible restrictions of the AI be damned.

Given the financial commitment of tens of millions of dollars made to coach and stadium as well as the academic sacrifices made in recruiting, what do you think the odds are that a physics major whose family makes $X per year receives the exact same financial aid as a basketball recruit whose family makes the same $X per year?

Low, if not zero. That qualifies as a discretionary kind of athletic scholarship.

And of course, if your family makes less than $100,000 or so, you're on a free ride. Whether you call it financial aid or an athletic scholarship, that's straight cash, homie.

"Do you really believe the published attendance was the actual attendance?"

No. Of course not. Nor have I implied that anywhere.

I'm just comparing announced attendance figures over time. Take that for whatever it's worth.
