No difference looking backward, but for the future, yes, there is a difference.
Everyone seems ready to anoint McGowan as The Savior Of The Program Going Forward, because "his" defense beat Harvard.
But, was Harvard beaten by "his" defense? Or just the fact that Harvard wasn't prepared for ANY different defense?

I ask because, if McG is given the reins and 'his' defense gets torched next year by everyone, once they are prepared for it, then what has been gained?

Understood. My perspective was that preparing a scheme that Harvard was not expecting/not prepared for was a smart move, and one that would be hoped for in the future.

Agreed. Implementing a 'surprise' scheme was a good move, one that helped win the day.
I just hope that if McGowan is given greater leeway in the future, that he is not a one-trick-pony.

Interestingly, this revelation seems to argue that the talent was always there, but was just not being utilized properly. In other words, the primary factor in the defense's shortcomings this season was scheme, not execution. Pretty much the opposite of what Coach Reno usually places the blame upon...

Maybe the players were just finally motivated to really play. Is it reasonable to implement that many adjustments to confuse and confound Harvard with limited practice 1 week in advance? If Yale was that gifted a defense they would have made those changes already and won games they needed to win.
