Bucky also beat LSU when it was ranked in the pre-season top ten. Unlike Ohio State, Michigan outplayed Bucky. Michigan also outplayed Ohio State for most of that game. Penn State beat Ohio State. All of that leads me to the conclusion that the Big Ten champion should go to the playoff. Not sending the champion would devalue the regular season and substitute subjective judgments for on-the-field performance.

If the selection committee wants to send another BIG team in addition to the BIG champion, that would devalue other conferences in my opinion. The Big 12 and PAC 12 champions should be in the playoff as well. If conference champions are ignored, the whole process becomes just a subjective beauty contest. Who says that Washington, Colorado, Oklahoma or Oklahoma State couldn't beat any team in the country after six weeks of healing and practice.

B1G may get hosed here. Assuming form holds:

Keep in mind, last year the big 12 didn't send anyone because they didn't have a "championship game" This year, the top B1G teams aren't in a "championship game"

Now if Florida beats Bama - both will make it, plus Clemson (assuming a win) and ??

If Colorado and Oklahoma State win, Ohio State makes it.

I have a hard time seeing the committee "hosing" Ohio State in favor of Oklahoma, given the 45-24 beatdown that the Buckeyes put on the Sooners in Norman. That kind of decision would be a de facto statement that conference championships matter more than overall resume, head-to-head and strength of schedule, all of which favor Ohio State.

your sentence omitted

...who lost to Penn State later in the year.

Momentum is often one of the metrics that such committees use. A big win by the Sooners could vault them in. Don't forget the "make up" factor of excluding the Big12 last season.

It does depend on this weekend's games, though... A Colorado win will keep the Pac12 out, and get the Buckeyes in.
