How is it that Harvard has 20 players on its men's basketball roster and Yale has 14? Is there an upper limit or a formula?

Princeton actually played twenty men in their annual Dision III game over the weekend.

Yale only has 13 because Makai Mason is out for the season. One of the smallest rosters not only in the Ivys but also compared to most leagues. Hopefully the lack of depth this season will be made up for with the talent that Jones has in his freshman class. After being injured just before the season began 3 star Jordan Bruner played briefly in his first game (Vermont) on Saturday and looked pretty good. Miye Oni continues to excel, earning Rookie of the Week for the third time in a row. He's an outstanding talent who broke Shabazz Napier's scoring record at the National Prep School Invitational.

This is one of the real hidden advantages of the Ivies. Mike Krzyzewski can only offer 14 scholarships a year. Period.

In contrast, Tommy Amaker can offer the equivalent of 20 or more financial aid packages which are comparable to a full scholarship if the student-athletes qualify.

Of course, in theory all the Ivies can do that as well. But only James Jones and Mitch Henderson have the same kind of resources in financial aid. Moreover, it's the bigger financial commitment to basketball made by Harvard generally that gives Amaker an advantage in recruiting compared to his peers.

So Amaker can bring in 50% more recruits than Krzyzewski can That is a huge advantage considering how hard it is to project how 16- and 17-year-olds will play as 20- and 21-year-olds. Amaker started aggressively recruiting Siyani Chambers when the latter was 13 years old. It's easier to do that when you've got 50% more margin for error in the guys you bring in.

Men's hoop gets 13, not 14 ships. This is first time K has used all 13...of course it is 13 for entire team, not per year. Same is true in football...ivy can bring in 30 per year. Div 1 limited to 85 which means most schools only bring in 21 or 22 per year given red shirts.

Yes, it's hard to predict how good a player will be at age 20-21. Maybe that's why Coach K switched to recruiting players who leave college at age 18. Less variability.

Not sure your point but in hoop pretty clear who the elite players are at an early age...no one is surprised that LaBron, Durant, Carmelo, Anthony Davis, Towns, Wiggins etc would be elite players. All play each other in summer. Know who is legit...very few surprises such as Curry.
