Subject: Dead Period

The dead period for recruiting went into effect on 12/12 and runs through 1/13. I never remember it lasting so long. They must have changed the rules.

What this has done is accelerate the Ivy verbal commitment process. I was wondering why my school has so many kids already committed and why we had so many already in on official visits. It's because what would normally be a big visiting weekend for Penn in early January now falls in the dead period. My guess is that most Ivy football teams have 25+ commitments at this point in time.

During the dead period coaches can communicate in writing with recruits. I think recruits can initiate phone calls, but not the staff. There can still be commitments, but no home visits and no big on campus recruiting weekends. I believe if a recruit does come to campus they can't have any contact with our coaches.

Here is the official rules on this. There are dead periods and quiet periods. I think some of the dead periods occur during the AFCA convention.

The optimist's view is that Dartmouth will be well-positioned to get the guys who were hoping for a BCS scholarship, but didn't get it.

I presume he will "count" for the current class even though he only has three years of eligibility.
