A listserv is not the same thing as social media like Facebook or twitter. It is more akin to email which has an expectation of privacy. Here it's the definition of a listserv from Wikipedia:

The term Listserv (written by the registered trademark licensee, L-Soft International, Inc., as LISTSERV) has been used to refer to electronic mailing list software applications in general, but is more properly applied to a few early instances of such software, which allows a sender to send one email to the list, and then transparently sends it on to the addresses of the subscribers to the list.

Yes, this is correct. A listserv is equivalent to a group e-mail distribution list. There is nominally an expectation of privacy within the group but the reality is that, once any ostensibly private group extends beyond two in number, privacy is compromised. That is the nature of human behavior.

The more successful Ivy swimming and diving squads number around three dozen athletes. I went to look up the size of Princeton's roster and it's been taken down from Tiger website. Not a good sign. Harvard's roster has 35 names.

If you're going to share even borderline misogynistic or otherwise offensive messages with three dozen recipients, you're counting on a lot of addressees to protect you from other guy friends, girlfriends and just the random person who hits "Reply All" instead of "Reply" and might forward the message, inadvertently or intentionally. Lots of risk there.

Just today, I've heard the situation at Princeton, Harvard and Columbia discussed at length on SportsCenter and The Sports Reporters. That's a lot of air time on ESPN for the Ivy League. With the addition of Princeton to the offenders, it seems that we've finally reached critical mass for national media attention.

Horrible judgement on the players part to be sure. No argument there.
