In reply to: Calvin 's message, "Re: UCONN" on 13:39:10 12/27/16 Tue

He was fired after 2 years of a 5 year contract and there remains a $16.9 million guarantee which the Bills will honor.

Can you imagine Rex and his brother engaging in home visits to 17 and 18 year old recruits?

Buy a motor home and see the world.

You have to wonder what makes these teams give out such contracts, or maybe they have too much money to think clearly. Then again, so do some colleges - how many former coaches is Notre Dame paying?

Irrational optimism is a powerful influence on human behavior. The Bills committed to a contract two years ago which was way richer than it had to be because, in their own minds, they had to confirm and ratify their decision that Ryan was the best choice.

It's not like the world was rushing to hire Ryan. The Jets had just fired him. He needed a job. The Bills probably could have offered him a one-year contract and had him happily accept it, much like Fitzpatrick ultimately accepted a one-year deal from the Jets.

I believe that 2016 was the final season that Notre Dame paid Charlie Weis and I further believe that Kansas is still paying him.

Irrational optimism is a powerful influence in other spheres. Before Trump's election, many market prognosticators opined that a Trump victory would lead to a 5-10% correction in US equities. Instead, they've rallied about 8% on optimism that everything potentially good will come to pass: deregulation, lower taxes, steeper yield curve, repatriation of foreign cash, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny.

Optimism. Ain't it great?

It's all about branding. Rex Ryan was a brand as was his father going back to the '86 Bears. My guess is that hiring a brand name coach for a small town franchise like the Bills was big news. There was success in his background but now that success is farther and farther in the past and his brand is severely tarnished. Without a big re-branding as a successful coordinator somewhere, he's done.

Rex was a much better defensive coordinator than head coach. That's how it works out sometimes, people think just because a guy is a successful coordinator he would make a good head coach.

Ironically, Rob Ryan has always been a mediocre defensive coordinator and he was never asked to be a head coach even by his main benefactor Al Davis. Rob also is more of a loose cannon than Rex. Both have more than worn out their welcome in the NFL.

Also, Buddy Ryan was not a great head coach either. He did ok with Philly but his "Buddy Bull" act wore thin in Arizona.

The Pegula's have serious change
He sold his Nat gas biz at the height of the market 10 yrs ago for 4 bill, which he started for 7500
He donated 100 mil to PSU to start and fund D-1 hockey program and build a new rink. He then bought Buffalo Sabres for 185 mil and after Ralph Wilson died he bought the Bills. He wants to win and isn't afraid to spend his money chasing his dream

If he keeps hiring Rex Ryan types, he will be dreaming a long time.

I know this will brand me as a hopeless softy, but I always feel sad to see someone lose their job with a baby on the way.

...merely attempted to surreptitiously steal a bunch of office supplies after he heard that he was about to be fired? ;)

Thanks. If I get all the illegal alien votes that Trump described, I might win.
