Let me emphasize I know absolutely nothing about this particular situation. Zilch.

BUT it is very important to continually remember that, in Ivy League sports, the student athlete is in charge. For all our other quibbling over policies and practices, this is the piece that elevates -- not separates, elevates -- us from the scholarship world, the true justifying reason for the formation of the league in 1954, and the single thing we can never allow to be compromised.

Given the substantial pressures on the students these days (and they feel even more intense when you're 18) it's a great tribute to the Ivy coaches that relatively few students elect to drop varsity sports completely. But the knowledge that they can is crucial to all parties, and we need to be respectful of everyone when they do. The coaches are there to teach, not win, and the students are there to learn, not play. When those don't mesh, they both may be better off pursuing separate activities.

Just saying.

Happy New Year to all!

If the goal is teaching not winning, why do they keep score?

There has never been a more blatant lie than the whole "we play for the love of the game only" canard at any level of athletics.

These people are competitive and ALWAYS play to win. One does not need to recruit potential scholarship players to be a good sports teacher.

If teaching and learning was the primary goal of Ivy League athletics, then this board wouldn't exist.

How else would the legacy of the famous three rings be supported?
