To my mind, the best mascots fall into one of two categories. The first is where the mascot itself is inspiring. There actually aren't too many of those: Eagles, Tigers, Wildcats, Lions, Wolfpack. We've got two of those, Princeton and Columbia. Maybe you could make an argument for Brown and Yale, but it would be a weak argument.
The other good category are those where the mascot has a special connection to the school itself: Lord Jeffs, Ephmen. We've got one in our conference, the Quakers.
The best mascots combine the two: Longhorns, Nittany Lions, Illini, Miami Hurricanes.
The worst mascots are the ones which are just colors. Incredibly, in an eight-team conference, we've got three of them. Crimson at least has the advantage of being fairly unusual. Cornell and Dartmouth, nope (though the latter has the extenuating circumstance of having been forced to abdicate a superior prior mascot).
