In all college sports, the coach is almost always the most important ingredient to competitive success. Of course, certain schools have structural advantages or disadvantages. It's easier to win at Harvard than it is at Brown. As foehi listed, Penn has many advantages in basketball: The Big 5, the Palestra, Wharton, the history, even the rivalry with Princeton.

I think Dunphy felt that, even with all of Penn's advantages, Bilsky should have treated him with more deference. For his part, Bilsky may have felt like Jerry Jones with Jimmy Johnson: "Hey, you're replaceable."

It seemed like Dunphy left Penn more than he went to Temple. Like Sydney Johnson going to Fairfield, he wanted out.

Interesting. This may have also coincided with Gutman replacing Rodin at the top. Judy was very supportive of athletics.
