Subject: OOC schedules for 2017

Pretty weak-ass scheduling, if you ask me, for the league this upcoming season.

http://biggreenalertblog.blogspot.com/2017/01/schedule-musings.html

Only Cornell appears to have a tough schedule. Yale's is fine.

The rest of us should go 3-0 or at least 2-1.

Not moving in the right direction for those hoping to see Ivys add a fourth non-conference game as well as play tougher FCS teams if not FBS.

Nobody was claiming our OOC schedule was weak in 2016.

...claim responsibility if an Ivy AD develops an eating disorder due to the constant schedule-shaming to which they are subjected here?

Generally agree but Penn did find a way to lose to Jacksonville during those two bad years before Priore took over and Lehigh not only kicked our butts last year, but did a number on the other Ivy co champ - Princeton.

At least we have Jacksonville at home and the team seems to have gotten back on track

My recollection is that Jacksonville got sanctioned at the conclusion of that season for giving players scholarships in violation of PFL rules.

Presumably, those types of guys won't be playing this fall. Penn should be a comfortable favorite.

You (or your imposter) devoted many posts to advocating/defending Dartmouth's weak-ass OCC scheduling in the past.

Or have you forgotten?

I was talking about the LEAGUE's OOC schedule.

In years past, we've played UNH, Towson, Army, Villanova, William and Mary, CPSLO, SUNY-Albany and the usual PL/NEC/PFL teams.

On slate for 2017 is Delaware (a shell of its former self) and the usual PL/NEC/PFL teams.

That's a dropoff. If you disagree, go ahead and make your case.

Now, you want to talk about Dartmouth in particular, I fully acknowledged--repeatedly--that our 2010-15 schedule was a dropoff from our 2000s schedule. My objection was people treating the "Butler Bowl" as if it was some D-III scrimmage when Butler--unlike 95% of the OOC opponents that year--actually went to the FCS playoffs.

Does that clarify?

Butler was a playoff stand-in for San Diego that year. 1st Place San Diego was sanctioned by the PFL.

The Butler Bowl is the name of their stadium, btw.

I know about the stadium. But "Butler Bowl" was a derisive term used by some posters on this board when referring to the D-B series (even the game in Hanover).

I never claimed that Butler was UNH. But they weren't Adams State either.

Dartmouth weak scheduling: It's what we need! It makes us better! It's good thing!

Everyone else: Weak-ass! (Implication = not a good thing)

I believe teams should schedule at least one, preferably two, OOC challenges, which is why I disagreed with the Dartmouth weak-ass approach a few years ago, the Harvard approach now, and other teams that adopt it going forward.

If you don't see the difference between individual teams and the league as a whole, I can't help you.

As an Ivy fan, I'm glad Cornell is playing a tough OOC. But if I were a Cornell fan, I'd be less sure it's best for the program to do so.

Archer still needs wins.

What did everybody think about Don Brown's quote on BGA? "If you're not running to the ball, you're a traitor. Might as well be playing for the other team."

I don't get that. Guys often have assignments which don't involving running to the ball. The whole point in defending some high octane offenses is that every defensive player must focus on doing *HIS* job (staying in his lane, sticking with his man, dropping back to the further receiver downfield) rather than break contain by running to the ball.

The best OOC game this year is Princeton vs San Diego. If the Ivy League participated in a bowl game that probably would have been last year's bowl game match- up.

I'll also be following Cornell-Delaware with interest. Yale as always has a solid OOC schedule. I understand why Columbia felt the need to soften -up but I don't understand Penn. They need to get Villanova back on the schedule. Harvard is an annual disappointment in scheduling. They should play William & Mary again.

UNH is back on Dartmouth's schedule starting in 2021, it sure takes awhile to reschedule once the cycle is broken

Using Sagarin ratings for 2016, analysis below. Apologies in advance for the lousy formatting of text on this board.
Schools sorted by strength of average OoC opponent (includes home field adjustments).
First number = avg OoC opponent (including HFA)
Second number = Sagarin rating of own team
Third number = average spread fav/dog vs. OoC

Keep in mind that one team can skew a three-team average -- like Lehigh or SD on the high side, or Stetson on the low side. In other words, in this table, two weak opponents plus Lehigh would look tougher than it really is; two solid opponents plus Stetson would look easier than reality.

Yale,,,,,,46.08,,,,,,32.12,,,,,,-13.96
Cornell,,,,,,42.25,,,,,,31.14,,,,,,-11.11
Penn,,,,,,36.62,,,,,,46.64,,,,,,10.02
Princeton,,,,,,35.91,,,,,,54.26,,,,,,18.35
Dartmouth,,,,,,30.54,,,,,,35.57,,,,,,5.03
Columbia,,,,,,30.33,,,,,,32.38,,,,,,2.05
Harvard,,,,,,30.1,,,,,,39.39,,,,,,9.29
Brown,,,,,,29.96,,,,,,28.47,,,,,,-1.49

Wouldn't "biggest cupcake" be same as biggest "can't miss"?

What makes one tastier (sorry) than the other?

"Cupcake" = biggest differential between the two teams. E.G., biggest blowout.

"Can Miss" = two teams of low-ranking in the same game.

"Best game" = the game with the highest combined power rating for the two teams.
"Can Miss" = the game w/ the lowest combined power rating.

"Cupcake" = biggest predicted margin of victory for the Ivy school.
"Stretch" = biggest predicted margin of defeat for the Ivy school.

One correction" Ivies play 3 games vs. CAA (not 2).

"Can Miss" means lowest rated, not biggest blowout.

Because, you know, Stetson beat Brown last fall.
