The timing may be good for Big Red alumni to provide their feedback on the importance of being more competitive in athletics and working with the Cornell alumni base. Each of the other Ivies have benefitted from recent donations from alumni to support new athletics facilities and/or endow coaching positions.

While athletics may be underfunded, Cornell recently has benefited from some of the nation’s largest alumni donation in the past three years. Just last week, H. Fisk Johnson has pledged $150 million to Cornell’s College of Business in what is one of the largest gifts ever given to a business school. The business school will soon open the new 76,000 sq. ft. Breazzano center, which resulted result of David Breazzano’s $25 million gift. In 2015, Sandra and Edward Meyer donated $75 million to Cornell to establish a new cancer center. In 2013, Sandy Weill pledged $100 million for the Medical School, which brings his total Cornell donations to over $600 million. Finally in late 2013, Irwin Jacobs donated $133 million to for the new Cornell Tech on Roosevelt Island in New York City.

With some effort from the university development team, it is only a matter of time before one of the Cornell alums steps to the plate to make a similar major donation to support Cornell athletics.

There are even more donations to the Ithaca campus, via Charles Feeney, bringing the total to over 500 million in the past 3 years. Most going to academic units, financial aid and faculty recruitment and retention. However, none to athletics or athletics facilities, save 1.5 mil to the tennis program just announced.
You are correct, hopefully soon that domino will fall, where that certain alum will step up w/ a major gift to athletics.
