I have not seen any staff changes on the Cornell football website, but spring practice starts in a little over a month, so I hope they get the staff solidified in time.

Hopefully this portends good things for Coach Burkett, Cornell and UNLV.

Travis Burkett has been one of Cornell's best assistant coaches and recruiter for the better part of a decade. While it's a bummer to lose him, looks like the UNLV job is a nice opportunity moving up to FBS football. He will be missed.

Drove by Schoellkopf last weekend only to be reminded of that ugly parking garage we alums, students, and members of the Ithaca community have to endure during home football and lacrosse games. Would you want to coach at the only university in America with a parking garage as your back drop? Oh yeah I forgot.....some posters on this website think our ugly stadium doesn't turn off recruits or coaching candidates.

Thanks Floridared! The key is we need a lot of alums writing the admin regarding the West Stands. Football hasn't had a winning season in over 12 years and the stadium situation is not helping matters. Our lacrosse team just got blown out the last two games and the ugly stadium situation is even impacting their recruiting. It's the little things that all add up.

I guarantee you if Harvard or Yale tore down their visitor section the Crimson/Bulldog alums would be fuming! Many Cornell alums have contributed to Big Red athletics over the years, but it really makes us mad when the university doesn't maintain the stadium's basic infrastructure.

Seems to me that there might be bigger fish to fry. Overall funding of football comes to mind. A few key examples:

-Only able/willing to purchase new white uniforms last season. Had to wait until this season to purchase the new red ones
-Up until this coming season, thanks to the Football Association, the players/families were charged for their Nike football gear package (socks, under pad gear, training gear, etc.), albeit at a reduced rate, but how many divsion 1 programs charge the players/families for their training gear?
-No indoor facility (in Ithaca, NY)
-Going cheap on post game meals (pizza, fried chicken). Is this how you feed a division 1 football team?
-Skinmping on coaches. Is there a division 1 program in the country with fewer coaches and less experience?
-How about sports performance? Sports performance management? Sports science? Real training and medical staff. Has anyone visited a real PROGRAM? The support system and resources isn't anywhere near where it needs to be. It's a good thing the education is one of the BEST. The alumni network is awesome! The commitment to football is tremendously lacking.

I can live with the stands. Do we want quality recruits? Let's strive for real, quantifiable improvement to the resources that are allocated and can make a real difference first. When they can fill the crescent, then they can put up some more stands.

Sorry...Just my two cents.

Good points. I wasn't aware of the other deficiencies, but I can tell you for certain that the indoor practice facility will be built before the West Stands/with offices/training space underneath them. As I mentioned in another of Sprint's postings before, they already have a large construction pledge toward the funding for that facility, but everything is on hold until the new President gets settled in.

GoBigRed.......I agree with you on all your points regarding lack of funding, however, it all comes down to a little word we learned in accounting class...REVENUE. When we have a poor stadium situation and we do very little to actually fill Schoellkopf for home games then everything else dries up. I believe Cornell is near the bottom of the Ivy League in terms of what we budget for football. Unfortunately, when our attendance, media coverage, and other sources of revenue continue to decline, so will all other aspects of the program.

I have said this many times on this website over the years that I can see some Ivies like Cornell, Brown, and Columbia actually dropping football within the next decade or two. Problems like not fixing our stadium will only continue the decline in attendance and alumni support, until it's too late and the football program is gone forever.

Love your support Sprint...Love your enthusiasm for the stands as well. Revenue will come with WINNING. Having visitor stands does not increase a WINNING a percentage.

Sprint66 - It is not the stands. Winning starts and ends with the staff. Who they have for coaches, what they focus on during the season and off-season and how they prepare for an opponent and adjust in a game.

If a school unilaterally drops football, they will risk being kicked out of the Ivy League.

Cornell, Brown, and Columbia need the Ivy more than the Ivy needs them.

David Archer's tenure and many of the issues discussed can be summed up by the inability to put together a strong staff. Emails suggest the players have gotten bigger in the weight room, but have struggled with on field development. There is no priority more important. We have had three coordinators (2 on Offense, 1 on defense) that were never consistently successful anywhere. I'm still shocked that we hired the OC from one of the worst offenses in the country at Rhode Island. You can win with old uniforms and limited sponsorship gear (Brown), you can win with one side of the stadium missing (Fordham), but if you don't develop talent you can't win.

I have been saying this on the blog for years.

LGR......I agree with you, but we are not winning the recruiting battle to field a championship team as we only won two Ivy games last season. Archer is making progress, but when kids visit Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, etc. and they see beautiful stadiums, then they visit Cornell which is by far the most rural campus and our stadium is simply not up to par. We lost a local recruit a few years ago to Princeton where he was a three year starter. I spoke to his parents who said Princeton's facilities were just far superior to Cornell. We lost to Princeton at home this past season 56-7! So I don't want to hear an ugly parking garage visitor section does not impact recruiting. It clearly is impacting recruiting, because they have been either condemned or torn down since Kent Austin was head coach.

Princeton's stadium is the "newest" in the Ivy League. I wouldn't fret over a few recruits comparing stadiums. They also look at weight rooms, training facilities and practice facilities. At least our son did. The point is, the west stands rebuild is not going to change in the near future unless you know someone willing to write a big check for that project, so why keep bringing it up.

Cornell parent.....it's a collection of things that are impacting Big Red football from the stadium, admissions, coaching turnover, equipment, admissions, etc. It's a long list. I bring up the West Stands because the cost is less than the difference in what most of the other Ivies spend on football over Cornell. The reality is we alumni are sick and tired of losing in football year after year after year. We hope your son and his classmates will turn the tide. Go Big Red!!!

Joe Villiapiano looks like a nice pick up from Harvard. He is certainly accustomed to winning. Cornell has already experimented with the pass all the time spread offenses without much success. So hopefully his experience brings a balanced offense to the East Hill to help keep our defense off the field.
