My guess is that Bagnoli has put huge recruiting efforts toward BC, one of the country's premiere HS programs (see Kurt Holuba) located about 15 miles from Morningside Heights, since ten minutes after accepting the Lions' job. ANY receiver under 6'2" starting for BC is a serious football player by definition.

And Penn under Coach Bagnoli recruited a lot of talent out of BC so he has long-standing relationships there.

That said, Observer's sarcasm was as usual very clever (not).

Wouldn't it be a mortal blow to the Big 0's self esteem if he learned that Harvard signed a player also recruited by Columbia?

Say it's not so. Would have to be fake news.

Perhaps stating the obvious, but if other high level recruits see these guys (thinking of their basketball recruit) choosing an ivy, then perhaps other ivies will be able to present themselves more persuasively as a suitable landing spot.

From the ESPN article:

White, whose older brother, Brady, is a quarterback at Arizona State, is the highest-ranked commitment for the Ivy League school since ESPN started its rankings in 2009. Princeton signed a four-star prospect in 2014 in defensive end Kurt Holuba, but never a prospect ranked in the ESPN 300.

Surace has worked himself into a place where he can recruit option QBs like Epperly and Lovett, and dropbacks like Kanoff and White, with equal zeal. Not a bad starting point for an offense, although he clearly needs a lot of moving parts to keep the whole thing in high gear.

Imagine being a high school applicant who is a violin prodigy, applying to Ivies but also having to keep an eye on which other top violinists are interested in your school.

Or to extend the example, you've won the National Mathematics Contest and are trying to decide between MIT and an Ivy when all of a sudden several Intel Science Context finalists commit to MIT.

It ain't easy being a good, but not great, quarterback looking for a home.

Clearly, the commitment of Brevin White to Princeton is a huge catch for the Tigers and Coach Surace. Brevin is a ESPN top 200 recruit (193rd ranked prospect).

This was a featured story today on the Dan Patrick Show and got good coverage in ESPN news

http://www.espn.com/college-football/recruiting/story/_/id/20158290/espn-300-qb-brevin-white-commits-princeton-arizona-state-oregon-state-tennessee-utah

Hopefully, this will open doors for more three and four-star football recruits (ranked below top 150) to strongly consider the Ivy League. There is an interesting back story here: Brevin's own brother, Brady White, is a perfect example of how being a top ranked recruit is no guaranty of success. Brady was even a much higher ranked recruit than his younger brother Brevin. (Brady was a top 50 ESPN recruit, listed by Rivals as the second-best pro style quarterback in the country and was the highest rated quarterback signee for Arizona State in the era of Internet recruiting evaluation service.). Yet, Brady White is still only the third string quarterback at ASU in his third year on campus with his primary prospects of playing based on requiring both quarterbacks ahead of him to get hurt.

I am guessing that there is a good chance that his brother Brady would gladly trade an Ivy League education combined with being a three or four year Ivy starter over being the third string QB at a second tier academic school like ASU. I do not fault any athlete for wanting to play at the highest levels, especially at a school like Stanford, Duke or Notre Dame, but the vast array of attractive options for the Ivy League athletes post-graduation can be a very tempting for those elite athletes who also are fine students.

Let's see if Princeton can hold on to White for the next year. Surface has lost three QB commits including the current starter at Duke. He also flipped Chad Kanoff from Vanderbilt and James Franklin and Kevin Davidson from UC Davis.

Good point, at this level of player the recruiting does not stop until national signing day, and there are always a lot of last-minute movements. I hope the cautionary tale of his brother's experience at a Power 5 school will make him less of a flight risk for Princeton.

Kevin Davidson, who was a 3-star recruit and the "drop-back QB" heir apparent to Chad Kanoff, must be feeling snake bit after Kanoff got a 5th year of eligibility and now White will come in for Davidson's last two years. But as the big-time programs like to say, you've got to be ready to compete to play every year!

Assuming he honors his commitment a great get.

Either way I think what we are seeing in microcosm the slow resurgence of Ivy Football.

With strong finaid packages at all the schools the financial downside of attending an Ivy is low and the long term upside is quite high.
This appreciated more than ever.

If you are a good player you will get a shot at the pros when you graduate and if not you have a solid education with a strong alumni network to get you going in life outside of sports.

Credit Harvard for aggressively recruiting FB and BB players to the league in the last 10 years and making the Ivies a real option for these national caliber athletes.

Bok and Bowen must be rolling over in their graves.

Derek Bok is still alive, but your point is well taken.

The slow drift toward better football is likely not supported by either Bok or Bowen, may the latter rest in peace.

On the other hand, Bok and Bowen may be more comfortable with improving football, because the football banding system allows much less leeway for schools to play games by changing their allocation of weak students between different sports.

Basketball, hockey, lacrosse and baseball compete against each other for low AI applicants at every Ivy. There's a lot more opportunity for academic hanky panky in men's basketball.

I actually feel that Bok and Bowen would both be very pleased with the dramatic improvement in the academic quality of Ivy student athletes now compared to the Ivy student athletes in the 1960s to 1980s era. Reflective of the vast improvements in quality of overall applicant pools, the football, basketball and hockey averages for GPA and SAT test scores for both the team average and for the lowest tier of recruits clearly have significantly improved. When you go to alumni reunions, so many of the athletes are the first to recognize that they would no longer be able to be admitted with today's far more competitive applicant pool. While there always be a few isolated exceptions or some athletes who may get in trouble, these Ivy student athletes of today are equally talented in the classroom as they are on the field, basketball court or hockey rink.

If White can develop enough to start in Surace's Circus as a freshman, it doesn't seem to me Davidson as a junior has anything to complain about. Kanoff got zero throws his first year. Never mind Surace has been known to play three QBs at once, just for the sake of sadism.

Generally true of all HS players at all positions. Many high FBS WE recruits are this proportion. For example per 24/7, 5-star WR recruits at LSU and USC are 6'2.5"/190 and 6'4"/192.

And .several All-Ivy WRs in the past few years were smaller/lighter than this player.

I am encouraged by someone who is already tall and merely needs to add weight, as I would expect any 17 or 18 year old to do, as opposed to having to also grow a few inches.

Whether this player will be good I can't say, but this is not the first time you have sniped at Princeton's recruiting.

One fine 5'9" athlete in the defensive backfield is no problem, ever. Some are legitimate All-Ivy. Five in a nickel defense is not a good strategy.
