In reply to: Tod Howard Hawks 's message, "A Salute to Paul Robeson, Rutgers All-America Football Player (1919)" on 15:58:38 07/09/17 Sun

Robeson grew up in a parsonage two blocks from the front gate of Princeton University. His father graduated from Lincoln University, whose president (and his mentor) graduated from Princeton in 1852.

During Robeson's years at Rutgers, which he achieved on a statewide competitive exam, one other black student was on campus. A consensus football All-American, he was held out of a HOME game against Washington & Lee at the insistence of the visitors. His proudest moment at Rutgers was a 5-1 baseball victory in the one game he played against the Tigers. A world-class bass (listen to some of his recordings on YouTube), he was allowed to sing in the Glee Club, but not to go to their year-end banquet.

After his graduation from Columbia Law, he quit his first and only position at a law firm because none of the secretaries would take his dictation, and none of the partners would demand it. And so he headed for the stage.

Heed Tod's advice, and heed it well.

If you go on YouTube, you can find a video of Robeson singing "Old Man River" from the musical Riverboat. Well worth a listen. Remarkable talent.

With all respect to Kern & Hammerstein, also listen to the great spirituals Let My People Go and Deep River. Utterly devastating.
