For Ivy coaches to bring in better talent every year, but still see crowds diminishing...

Saw on twitter this morning that Mason Williams, an All Ivy defensive back, will not be returning to Penn. He posted a classy note but did not indicate the basis of his decision.

Are these players in academic trouble or just seeking a bigger spotlight at another program? If you are good enough to make the NFL, the scouts will find you wherever you play. Giving up a Penn education just seems so shortsighted if they are in good standing academically.

Unfortunately there are still NFL coaches who don't take Ivy players seriously. Jon Gruden is infamous in this regard. Also if you get drafted in lower round it can make a big difference in your contract value. If you want to cast your net over as many pro opportunities as possible, a Power 5 conference background cannot be equalled.

Mason was an excellent player at Penn but I'm not sure he has NFL size or speed.. Penn played a bend don't break defense and Mason always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. I think we have pretty good depth at DB but guys who make the big plays don't grow on trees. He'll be missed.

Someday we'll find out why he left. Maybe it was to test himself against FBS competition at Duke. I kind of doubt that's the whole story, but I don't know anything other than what's in the tweets.

doesn't matter, mainly because the only big contracts are 1st or 2nd rnd the others small differences and for late rounder's it is the second contract that is the money one. I think both Penn kids have made a huge mistake by transferring mainly because it is so difficult to make it to the NFL. The latest studies about CTE are troubling and given the opportunity to graduate from Penn or TCU and unless Williams goes to Duke huge mistake but as a Dartmouth fan I hope the whole team transfers including Moskal I hope he goes back to cuse. Until he does Penn leads in the transfer game over Yale by admittedly small margin

GG's post about Dartmouth having 4 transfers in the 2010's eh none have even got on the field although I am hoping Fitz does. Speaking of transfers Patriot scion Harry Kraft is transferring down to D3 Colby another delusional move. Nice kid but he is 5 foot nothing and they have 2 returning QB's. he needs to listen to this song

Come kids get an Ivy education and laugh all the way to the bank

Duke has 15, Harvard 13.

Of course this is still preseason with 90 man rosters (I'll bet final rosters are very different), and also he wasn't at Harvard.

Players are probably thinking more about enhancing playing career, and besides they probably have an unrealistic assessment of their pro playing potential. But that's what kids do.

Are Penn academics/alumni networks really *that* much better than Duke?

None of them have (yet) showed up on All-Ivy lists, true. But they saw (or are expected to see) the field.

Alex Park, Robbie Anthony, Emmanuel Soto, Jimmy Fitzgerald.

The only guy who really didn't pan out was Julian Flamer.

Soto has been hurt and has had no impact, Park might have played well but he is a Dalyn casualty, Anthony minor impact 30 receps over 2 seasons

Moskal led Penn in tackles 2nd team All Ivy

You'll get no argument here that Dartmouth's 2010 transfers haven't nearly been as productive as Pete Oberle or Greg Smith from the 1990s.

But... they've seen the field.

:)

Between this and Collins leaving, there's definitely some head-scratching at Penn's offseason.

Curious to see two guys who were doing fine leaving a team with back-to-back championships.

But I do understand one possible aspect of their thinking. Most of the big regrets in life are regrets of omission, rather than regrets of commission.

I just watched the ESPN "30 For 30" about the "Catholics vs. Converts" Miami-Notre Dame game of 1988. Unlikely Irish hero Pat Eilers was a transfer from Yale, whose position coach told him on the way out of New Haven that he would never see the field in South Bend. Eilers responded with the inarguable rationale, "I don't want to spend the rest of my life wondering whether I could have done well at Notre Dame."

Eilers not only scored a critical touchdown in the big game, but has since thrived professionally, endowed a position coach salary and sent his kids to ND. Sometimes it does all work out.

Were they converted while incarcerated?
