Harvard-bound receiver Kym Wimberly of Holy Cross is juggling football and books just fine
BY ROD WALKER | RWALKER@THEADVOCATE.COM AUG 12, 2017 - 7:33 PM (0)
JohnCurtisHolyCross3459.jpg

"When Kym Wimberly took his tour of colleges in the northeast this June, he couldn't have made a bad choice.

All four of the schools that the Holy Cross senior wide receiver visited are in the Ivy League. In the end, Harvard won out and got a commitment from Wimberly, who also visited Yale, Princeton and Dartmouth.

"It just felt like home, and Boston is such an awesome city," Wimberly said. "Coach (Tim) Murphy is a great coach. I can start as a freshman and be an impact on the team. And obviously I chose Harvard because of the education. My family and I are both high on education."

Wimberly, listed at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, has excelled in the classroom and on the football field at Holy Cross. He scored a 27 on the ACT and has a 3.7 GPA.

On the field, he caught 47 passes for 670 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior. He also ran for a pair of scores for the Tigers. On special teams, he averaged 20.6 yards on kickoff returns.

"He's the ultimate team player," Holy Cross coach Eric Rebaudo said. "He's quite a competitor. He's one of those guys who makes everybody around him better. And he has a really good work ethic when it comes to books."

Wimberly had a long list of scholarship offers, ranging from in-state schools like Tulane, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese State to American Athletic Conference member Houston to military academies like Navy and Air Force.

But he chose Harvard, where he plans to study something connected to sports medicine."

Whatever the facts are, this article gives no indication that Y, P, or D admissions green lighted him. Just that he visited. Not every visit signifies admissibility.

All extended him offers - among 20 schools to do so.

While there are many additional other academic and admissions variables to potentially consider in this case, my preliminary AI index calculations for a 27 ACT and 3.7 GPA translates to an AI score roughly in the 190 to 195 range, which would easily qualify for the lowest AI band for any of the Ivy universities. Assuming his other admission factors are positive, this does not seem to be an especially controversial at least from an AI perspective. If he had a lower GPA, then it could have been problematic.

If he is Band 1 as it seems, Harvard must think he is very good or he has agreed to re-test which with improved scores could nudge him into Band 2. Some suppositions here. May not be correct.

Warrior Ii. If I am correct and Kym Wimberly already has an AI in the 190 to 195 range, he already is well above Band 1 with opportunity to move up even higher.

I did my rough calculations on an Ivy League Athletic Index calculator. It would be nice if someone had insights into preliminary measurements for calculating an AI using SAT/ACT and GPA data. Maybe MrJames has some insights here.

We could probably figure out his AI but I don't know the upper limit of Band 1 at Harvard. Does anybody among our posters?

I'd be speaking out of turn in talking about football specifically, but the Ivy AI floor is now 183. I'd be surprised if the lowest band was all that large anymore even for the schools with the highest targets to hit. I had an old sheet with every Ivies' bands when I was covering football in college, but that's about 15 years old now.

3.7 = 71 points or used to
ACT of 27 = 61 points or used to
If ACT is doubled, AI = 193
My guess is ACT has to be doubled.
Not sure if 193 is Band 2 at Harvard.

Like I wrote, he must be real good to be a Band 1 take at Harvard, if he is Band 1.

Like Bengal said, your own linked article says he visited Yale, Princeton and Dartmouth, not that he was offered by them.

Do you have anything that says he was offered by them (and maybe he was, but not based on this article), or are you projecting?

When Observer noted 20 offers, I looked it up and at least 2 recruiting sites say so. Not in the article he cited. So, based on these sites, this could very well be accurate. Those few times over the years when I scoop the board with a "commit", I always cite the source since I have good reason to believe these sites are not always 100% accurate. But if his AI is in the 190 range and he is really good, it is quite credible that he was green lighted at the Ivies mentioned; and have no reason to think otherwise. Not everyone who fits in a band and is sought by P 's coach gets admitted, and some get a green light later than at other Ivies. But as I say, I have nothing that suggests these sites are wrong about this player, and don't plan to try and find out.

That's very risky of you -reluctantly accepting that both 247 and Scout for are telling the truth about a Harvard admit! Are you sure you don't want to keep checking to see if all three sites weren't lying about his being offered by 20 schools, including Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Columbia and others, including Harvard? andhttp://www.scout.com/Recruitment/Kym-Wimberly-103484/RecruitInterests

But i take it you didn't check because you REALLY didn't want to acknowledge that he was offered a place in the Home of the Hamburger

Then again, it is a low bar.

Since when is it a non-Harvard person's obligation to research and post support for your conclusions?

It's super-tricky to do this without info about whether the GPA was weighted or unweighted, which would make a decent difference. Apparently the translation of a 27 ACT is a 1270-1300 on the SAT depending on the source. If the 3.7 is unweighted, that's going to be a solidly 190s AI. I can't imagine any Ivy having a tough time getting a 190s AI prospect that they want in the door unless the prospect actively raises a red flag during the application process. That being said - could be different for football, but on the basketball side, it'd be hard to see a 190s prospect who did everything right with admissions to be denied.

MrJames. That is my experience as well working with admission offices for a long time. Assuming it is 190 or over with no red flags and is a solid recruit, this is not a complex case
