Agree with Lion Rooter except that I think Princeton will beat San Diego.

Ross Dwelley was injured last weekend and will be out for the Toreros. In addition, USD's defensive line is simply not that good.

Princeton should be favored in this one.

all very sensible picks that seem obvious. The question is will any of these games be turned on their head?

While Princeton has a shot against USD, it is a long road game and the Toreros always have good talent. It could be close though.

Wagner has hit the skids but it's a new season, maybe Walt Hameline's successor isn't a complete bust. Wagner is last chance U for some good players.

should have checked the schedule. It always seems the ivy team makes the CA road trip (presumably for recruiting exposure perhaps).

In that case it is on USD to make their presence felt. No idea what they have in their arsenal but are generally a contender.

The Big Red have offense but they seem to have severe problems on defense every season. The Blue Hens are too much for them regardless.

Ducking Penn may result in a bye week for Jacksonville University. Flooding and damage from Irma have shut down the JU campus until the 19th. JU's game against D-II Walsh is in jeopardy.

Over at Stetson, Hatter players have been living in a hotel for several days. Kind of a drag.

I agree with most of the picks. Obviously Delaware is a very tough game for Cornell, BUT at least we have the balls to play them. Unlike Harvard who dropped local rival Holy Cross and won't even consider playing UNH. I applaud teams like Princeton playing San Diego and Yale having played both Cal Poly and Army in recent years. This league needs to play OOC games that attracts fans. One game I would love to see this weekend is Holy Cross vs. UNH. That should be a good game.

To take on a higher caliber program you need some playmakers. Harvard picked the right season to skip an OOC challenge since they need to discover what kind of team they have. Yale picked the right season to play Army with Morgan Roberts and Tyler Varga. Without them it would have been a cakewalk for Army.

Delaware is pretty tough. If Cornell can match them with points it would be something. It would be a shame if it ended up high scoring on both sides but the Hens win. The Big Red need a morale booster victory.

No chance Cornell does anything against a Delaware team that played Virginia Tech surprising tough. They are huge on the OL and DL lines. This will be an easy Blue Hens win.

I have admired the tough OOC schedule Penn has taken on over the years. But I don't get our first opponent this year. Ohio what? Maybe somebody can explain how this came about. I'm sure there's a story behind it.

Jacksonville cancelled out their return game (which was supposed to be played in Philadelphia) at a very late date. Why I don't know, but it appears it wasn't to slot in a FBS big money opponent, which is the usual case.

Teams schedule years out and with just about every team other than Ivies having 11 or 12 opponents, there are not many options left when something like this happens.

It's actually not so terrible for Penn this year as we need to break in a new starting QB (the name of the new starter is not yet announced although Priore said that determination would likely have been made at the end of last weekend).

Thanks. Do I remember correctly that this is how a game with Duquessne came about a few years ago?

Correct

I forget whether that happened as a result in something happening to disrupt the traditional Lehigh series or whether Nova bailed on us because of changes in league alignments etc or something else.

But the problem of back fill is much worse today. Duquesne would not even be an option today.

Penn jilted Lehigh to play game with St. Mary's.

Lehigh returned the favor the following year or year after.

Not sure what happened but I know it wasn't that. We played both Duquesne and Lehigh in 2003, the year we first added Duquesne.

There was something that happened between the two schools though that ultimately disrupted the Penn/Lehigh rivalry. I'm still not sure what happened, but it was the one OCC game we played that actually drew a crowd.

Not that it matters but what I heard (not what I know for sure) is that we had a hole in our schedule caused by Villanova which was caused because Nova was caught up in the midst of that ever shifting landscape that revolved around redefining a Big East Football Conference.

Bagnoli and Talley are very close friends and the series was ultimately restored when Nova's scheduling priorities readjusted.

In terms of Lehigh it was something else which I'm really not aware of. Perhaps it had to do with Andy Coen being hired away by Lehigh but I really don't know. The Penn/Lehigh game was a big draw relatively speaking and I'm glad they are back on the schedule.

San Diego with San Diego State.

San Diego is a PFL team who is not particularly daunting. At best, they're an ok team (currently at 203 in Sagarin). But certainly not worthy of applause.

Nice try GG... denigrate P's opponent before the game is played in order to lessen the value of a victory or exacerbate the ignominy of a defeat.

May not be San Diego State, but they did run the table on their conference on the way to a first round victory over Cal Poly before losing to North Dakota.

I'm not going to look past them.

San Diego isn't the worst opponent the Ivy is going to face this season. But that's a far cry from being impressed with them.

Put another way, San Diego is the type of opponent who would be the strongest team on Harvard's slate. Is that really saying much?

Please explain why you agree with Sprint that San Diego is an example of the Ivy's aspiration for challenging OOC teams.

They have played them scores of times - their leading non-ivy opponent. They play again in 2018 and 2020, as far as I know.

Ohio Dominican already 0-2.
Giving up over 500 yds and 41.5 ppg. Penn will pad offensive stats in this one.

Hey folks.....I just want to watch good college football. I have a relative on the West Coast who has only seen Cornell play one game in the big state and that was back in 1991 against Stanford. I believe the entire Ivy League needs to spread our wings and play a more competitive schedule as well as outside the Northeast. Unless you enjoy watching games with crowds the size of your high school JV team.

Look at Ivy basketball who has been playing tougher schedules and now we're much more competitive. Cornell went all the way to the Sweet 16 in 2010. Unfortunately we hired a terrible coach and the team went south fast, but at least we were a lot better for awhile.

Maybe. They have to stay healthy. They have to learn to navigate things once people know who they are and prepare for them. Everyone else has to stay well to protect them. The attack needs to be balanced. And etc etc. So - maybe.
