Dartmouth basketball is facing the abyss and the coach senses no danger.

Seems to me that you guys want it both ways.

You claim that last season was a "disaster" for Dartmouth. I think that's dubious, but I'll let you have it.

And you seem to criticize McLaughlin for not making Knight the focal point of the offense because he has the most talent on the team. Well... how is that strategy different from what McLaughlin did last year with Bourdreux?

What? "Focal point"? "...because he has the most talent on the team"? None of those things were said. The simple fact was stated that Knight is clearly more productive (by far) than the current starter at his position. So, if the winning strategy is to leave talent on the bench while the team languishes on the court, then good luck with that.

It was nice to get a win at Maine, albeit against a team that hasn’t beaten any D1 competition. The game was way too close for comfort until the last few minutes. Johnson had a breakout game which propelled the team so good for him. I watched the game and am still perplexed why Chris Knight isn’t starting and playing more. He got two early fouls but never got any more and played less than a half and still got 13 points. He is one of our most productive players and an athletic defender yet he plays less time than others who have significantly worse stats including Rai and Wright who has disappeared in games again after a solid start to the season. I don’t get it. McLaughlin seems to be very formulaic and can’t adapt to changing players and game situations. This is a big concern for me. The upcoming road trip will be telling. We are going to need our bigs to contribute as both teams we play next week have very good guards who are extremely quick and breakdown defenses.

He recruited Knight, Letoa, Rai, Jackson and Swett. Potentially a very good class. Let's see how the team plays against the other Ivies.

The comment isn’t about recruiting, it’s about coaching ability. I hope the men pull it together for Ivy play and keep us out of the basement. My concern is coaching decisions. So far McLaughlin hasn’t demonstrated he can coach and when you watch him on the sidelines he doesn’t know how to react when coaches change defenses and press. So far theMcLaughlin era has been very disappointing. I also understand that we may lose some of the freshman after the season as my contact tells me there’s a lot of discontent on the team due to the coaching.

Just picked up your e-mail. If you’re correct, he should be canned right after the season. If he is a better coach than you think, he has enough material to put a decent team on the floor this year and grow the program from there. The proof will be in the pudding.

Knight reminds me of Al McGuire’s famous “aircraft carrier”. If I were Sheehy, I’d tell McLaughlin that if Knight walks out of Hanover: “you’ll be right behind him”.

Jeez, everyone.....Dartmouth Basketball has been in the crapper for more than 50 years and you want to let yet another coach go after a couple of seasons?

It takes five plus years to build a championship caliber program in this league--in almost any sport......and often takes much longer.

Does anyone who doesn't win deserve a chance?

And BTW, if Knight is getting "no time," how did he just earn Ivy Rookie of the Week?

I am more of a football guy, but I do know it is going to take something really special to get Dartmouth into the upper echelon in this sport. And frankly we don't pay "something really special."
