Good piece, thanks. Particularly the part about Smith immediately understanding Coach Engles's point about staying level-headed and keeping the NBA stuff under control and in perspective.

Mike Smith put on another clinic today in Columbia's win over Maine today, in which the Lions led from start to finish by as much as 33 points.

Smith was really excellent in all aspects in yesterday’s easy win over Maine. He is a fantastic ball handler and, unlike last year, he is a much more complete player in all aspects of his game. We had a good lineup on the floor yesterday with Castlin back. Meisner, Adlesh, Tape and the four freshmen ( Faulds, Bibbs, Hansen and Stefanini) are all good players and Smith does not have to do everything on his own.

Yes, a great effort by CU. Maine is not a powerhouse by any means, but they beat Quinnipiac which we saw against CU is a very decent team. Hard to believe Smith is only a sophomore. He is getting better by the day. Have to believe that Castlin in the lineup was an intangible that got CU over the hump of blowing so many games recently. Perhaps his presence as a senior who does not panic under pressure helped. Let's hope and see what happens in the next few games.

Yes, Castlin is a truly excellent player with formidable athleticism. Still remember how good he was in his first year. His addition to the lineup really adds strength and creativity to our squad--it's more than 4 + 1; it's more like 4 + 1.5.

Now if we can only get Hickman to get in gear. He has been off for the whole season. Not sure why? Is he not fitting into the new system? If he ends up turning things around, I think we have a solid chance to be the fourth seed, but if not it will make things that much harder. I thought it was a given that Hickman would be in the center of the mix this year, especially with his experience as a senior. Maybe he needs to take a lot more shots in games to warm up. Any thoughts?

Hickman plays hard but has lost his offensive game. I saw him pass up several wide open threes and miss badly on bunnies. Castlin is just a better player and frankly so is Adlesh. So Hickman clearly should not be starting. He is hurting us right now.

Didn't know that, huh? "LEAGYE" is how YOU spelled it in your first post, chief. That's what [sic] means.

Old lion, I completely disagree with that. I think Hickman has shown great improvement this season. If he keeps improving at this rate, I think he can be an All-Ivy player soon. He plays very hard and his shot is improving. He has been knocking down his shots recently and creates a lot of chances for Columbia. Castlin hasn’t done very well since his return from injury and seriously lacked stamina in the game against Maine. I don’t think he’ll ever be the same player that he was before. If Hickman gets more game time, he will be able to improve his shot and become the player that we all know he is.
