In reply to: sparman 's message, "Re: Joseph Schumpeter Loves the Spread Offense, Misses Good Old Days of Yale-Princeton Domination" on 19:02:08 12/29/17 Fri

It works because the rule changes were enacted specifically to make it work.

In the six years prior to the 1978 NFL rule changes (primary of which were allowing OL to extend arms when pass-blocking, and no contact allowed with receivers after five yards), rushing accounted for 46% of offensive yards gained. The most-recent six years, that number has averaged 30%.

The '78 rule changes were just the beginning; nowadays, defending a competent passing game is ultimately a losing proposition.

The league (and by extension, its farm system the NCAA) wants highlight-reel material for the short attention span fanbase. An endless procession of 5-yard running plays doesn't cut it. Throw-throw-throw and length of the field scoring drives that take as little time off the clock as a typical basketball possession is what the powers that be want -- and have.

PS - touch my lawn, and I'm calling the cops.

voy vey....I like a good passing game, but I also enjoy watching the running game too. Watching nearly every team during this bowl season operating basically the same spread offense with nothing but five and ten yard passes gets boring. Twenty years ago college teams were running the shot gun, but they were also running the I-formation, empty backfields, triple option, wish bone, pro-set split backs, lots of fun stuff. Every college team today runs the same damn offense over and over again. That's OK I am turning off the college games and looking forward to the NFL tomorrow, as those contests are a lot more fun to watch.

Maybe they need to outlaw the spread offense like they did to the flying wedge in the good old days.

Washington Post tells old fogies like Sprint to get over it.
