Let's see. Alabama has a freshman QB being hyped as a Heisman candidate next year and a soph QB who lost two games in his first two years combined. Who knows what else, but my guess is the other guys aren't too shabby. I'm just not sure if I want to actually get on the football field that Bama would be my first choice.

This is hilarious, though I'm sure not for the folks in New Jersey.

Of course Ivy Patriot accurately assesses the competitive landscape in Tuscaloosa. If people are talking about Jalen Hurts transferring away to get out from the shadow of Tua Tongawhatever, it takes some guts to transfer in.

Our best recruits usually have a few if not several offers from FBS programs. But here's the starkest contrast possible. As the article says, it's the number one ranked football team in the country against the number one ranked college in the country. As somebody who hopes that academics still mean something in college athletics, I hope he's not just paying lip service to the value of an Ivy education.

It might depend on which playing field interests you.

I posted the following in a related thread below ...

Blake Barnett, the 4* QB who was beaten out by Jalen Hurts at Alabama, transferred to a JC and then ASU, where he is now holding a clipboard (or more likely, an iPad). And even if Hurts does the same thing by the time the current freshman phenom turns pro (or transfers) there will another 5-star stud recruit who comes along.

And despite all of the national championships, there are as many QBs from Bama currently playing in the NFL as Harvard, so there are no guarantees even if he ends up playing there.

Brevin White surely knows all of this, but how can he resist the opportunity to be whisked down to Alabama, be treated like a rajah, see the world’s most lavish locker room, and kiss the ring of Coach Saban?

My first question would be very simple: Whom did you offer at QB before you got to me? If they said nobody, I’d fall on the floor laughing and leave.

Yup.

This is what happened. Saban has come to the conclusion that Jalen Hurts is a real risk to transfer out from Alabama. He, his offensive coordinator and quarterback coach took out their list of QB prospects and put each candidate into a two-by-two matrix, with the vertical axis being quality of prospect and horizontal axis being likelihood of inducing the player to decommit from his Signing Day school.

There in the upper right-hand corner of the matrix is young Mr. White, a four-star prospect who committed to a program that Nick Saban -- who can lure studs from Louisiana away from LSU and speedsters from Florida away from the Canes, Gators and Noles -- is absolutely confident he can outmaneuver for a last-minute 2018 recruit.

Bob Surace just had his prom date receive a call from Brad Pitt.

I hope the kid or his parents come to their senses and realize that Princeton is a honor that most people can only dream about

Surace is a stand up guy. I emailed him a note congratulating him for doing a nice job profiling all his seniors and he got back to me in a half hour

It’s a huge credit to White that he has this astonishing choice to make, and if his accomplishments don’t prepare him for it, nobody’s would. Which should probably concern Saban even if he “wins”.

BTW my spellcheck just substituted “Satan” for “Saban”. Hmmmmm....

Guy has an amazing choice here that is seldom if ever seen but philosophically is a little whipsawed.

BIG time college football vs World Class education.

Why not go to Stanford/Duke/Northwestern and get both?

Duke and Northwestern may not be perceived as being as academically elite as Stanford or Princeton and White probably has a better shot at eventually playing at Bama than Stanford, which has 4 QBs on their team: redshirt sophomore and starter KJ Costello, his backup and former starter Keller Chryst (who is expected to transfer), redshirt freshman David Mills, one of the top QB recruits from last year, and a recruit who picked Stanford over Bama and is expected to redshirt (Jack Webb).

The allure of Alabama is that there is one (really good) QB on the roster and another who was not a big recruit and may transfer and no other 2018 QBs, along with the Crimson Tide mystique, resources and potential to play for national championships for 4-5 years. But at Bama White would be looking over his shoulder throughout his career for the next phenom QB recruit to displace him on the depth chart. And Alabama does not have a track record of being “QB U” when it comes to the NFL.

Have googled him and read his quotes. This kid really has his head on straight. I think that any of us would be interested to hear what Saban has to say. Alabama has said that if he committed this weekend, he could start classes on Monday and they would send for his clothes. Would be very surprised if he committed to Alabama this weekend (he doesn't appear to be impulsive). Should be very interesting.

It's not just who is on the team now, it's next year's and the year after's recruits. Current freshman phenom was brought in on top of a 4-star player (Hurts), and so on. Also he could be redshirted like so many players.

As you say interesting to watch, not a recruiting battle we're used to seeing play out. Saban doesn't lose many contests he really wants to win.

According to this article, the first QB (out of 3 being recruited) to accept the Alabama offers gets the QB slot. The articles all emphasize how much the other two guys want to go to Alabama (and how it's all about the football in Tuscaloosa).

From the same site

QB (3)

Brevin White, 4-star prospect, Paraclete (Mission Hills, Calif.)

Brevin White was offered by Alabama just a few days ago. White took an official visit to Tuscaloosa this past weekend. The Princeton commit (yes, you read that correctly) is still deciding on whether he wants to follow through with attending one of the most prestigious universities in the world or if he’d like to play for one of the most prestigious football teams in the world.

Brock Purdy, 3-star prospect, Perry (Gilbert, Ariz.)

Brock Purdy was originally offered by Alabama as a preferred walk-on. He ended up receiving a full scholarship offer earlier this month. Some recruits would be a bit peeved at a school for not fully committing to him from the start, but Purdy doesn’t care. He told SEC Country on Sunday that Alabama, Iowa State and UCF are his top-3 schools. He also said that the Tide staff was going to meet this week to decide which quarterback it wants this year, so that’s interesting to note. He’s expected to wait until Signing Day to make his decision.

James Foster, 4-star prospect, Sidney Lanier (Montgomery, Ala.)

James Foster’s favorite school growing up was Alabama, and he’s dreamed of playing for the Crimson Tide. Foster is still being evaluated, though. White and Purdy are the top options. Foster is down to Alabama, Florida State, LSU and Texas A&M.

Thanks for the update on Brevin White.
I was not surprised that he is thinking about it. National signing day is February 7, so we should know by then. He is very bright, and I think he knows that he might never play a down at quarterback for Alabama, particularly if Hurts decides to stay. On the other hand, White might very well start for Princeton as a Freshman. The more time he takes, the more likely it is that he will stay with Princeton (I hope).

Maybe he just wanted to go down and check out the co-eds and get a free meal at Dreamland.
