Watch the clips that follow this one. And yes, those were the days.
BTW-look how small the linemen were in those days.

One of my favorite books is Instant Replay, by star Green Bay Packer guard Jerry Kramer. Some of the best narration recounts Kramer's mental and physical battles with his archnemesis, Detroit Lion defensive tackle Alex Karras.

To your point, Jerry, about how small linemen were back in the day, Kramer was 6'2" and 245. Karras was the exact same height and weight. Today, they wouldn't be taken seriously at that size. And these are both multiple-time all-Pro linemen, who are on the periphery of being candidates for Canton.

Sometimes we forget just how unnatural it is that modern strength and conditioning coaches can so cavalierly create human beings who are 6'6" and weigh 310 pounds. Despite their ubiquitous status on football rosters, these are freaks of nature.

They would have good size to be LBs now. If they were fast enough.

The Lions had a guy named Roger Brown who weighed 300 lbs. He was considered a freak.Played nose guard, as it was known then. He was good but he'd be too small and too slow today.

My understanding is that the gambling scandal is the only reason Karras isn't in the HOF.

Loved him in Blazing Saddles, though!
