As you would expect, the scoop was had by the cracker jack staff at Big Green Alert:

Last line: "The former St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) quarterback will have to sit a year because of NCAA transfer rules, but he’ll have 4 years of eligibility."

I thought FBS -> FCS meant no sit-out, correct?

And I think BGA is correct.

Hey joins a staff of emerging, young QBs including Jake Gerbino who went 202 ground yds and 4 TDs against Princeton in the final game, while also beating Penn on the last play of the game.

Excellent news!

I thought we'd be fine with the returning QBs. If he can give us an upgrade, we should be pretty solid everywhere.

According to an April, 2018 article in seccountry.com:

“Allen was the odd man out in the Gators’ quarterback competition, rotating in behind redshirt sophomores Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask as well as freshman early enrollee Emory Jones in the Spring game Saturday.”

The seccountry.com article goes on to say that Florida is switching to a spread offense and that Allen posted “...because the offense is not the right fit for me, and because I want to continue to pursue my dream to play in the NFL, I am now seeking other opportunities to play football and am opening up my recruitment.”

Penn's Gavin Hoffman transferred from Northwestern for pretty much the same reason (i.e., coaching change and different offensive scheme).

He ended up doing pretty well for the Quakers.

Hoffman started all 12 games for Northwestern in 1998, passing for over 2,000 yards He transferred to Penn when the coach left, a new coach was hired and he was not the starting QB coming out of Spring practice. Hoffman was an excellent starter at Northwestern and at Penn.

Hopefully, Allen will be a fine QB for Dartmouth and benefit greatly from his Dartmouth education. However, comparing a starting Big Ten QB to a fourth string redshirt freshman who has never played a game of college football is a bit much, don’t you think?

Saying that he was a starting Big 10 QB is technically accurate.

The guess here is that he would have been a bit lower on the depth chart his freshman year if he was at a middle-of-the-pack Big 10 team or better.

As the Ivy League doesn't allow for red shirt freshmans will he have three years or four years of eligibility? Either way looks like he'll just miss playing Army.

Clifton Dawson got four years at Harvard after a redshirt year at Northwestern.

With this move there is incredible parity in the Ivy League. Six of the eight teams have a legitimate shot at a championship. I don't think I've ever seen the league so tight.

As a result the Ivy League should continue its dominance against OOC opponents it started last year with an 18-6 OOC record., although that record will be hard to match again.

If only FCS Playoff participation was allowed to showcase this talent better nationally...

I am thrilled we got him but that doesn't mean he is immediately anointed the starter. He will need time to learn playbook so unless he spends the summer in Hanover he is going to be way behind the three other guys. What also concerns me is the statement about the spread offense is not a good fit for him. Last time I checked Dartmouth ran the spread. So we will see.

The favorites are Yale and Princeton in my book. It will be interesting to see if Brevin "Whizzer" White has an immediate impact even with "gotta" Lovett returning.

There’s a good bit on the Web regarding Mr. Allen which I’m sure his new teammates are reading with great interest. One interesting fact is that he committed to Florida after finishing his sophomore year at Cardinal Gibbons High School. He then transferred from Cardinal Gibbons to St. Thomas Aquinas High School for his junior and senior years of football.

Hopefully he’ll take Holtsledge’s advice, decamp to Hanover and have four great years of Ivy education and football.

...would have a full summer to work out on campus with a large cohort of his teammates and to learn the playbook. We'll know soon enough if that's the plan.

Let’s hope he takes your advice. Incidentally, or perhaps not so incidentally, according to the Internet he missed the latter part of his high school junior season because of a back injury and took his freshman redshirt at Florida due to an operation on his foot just before the season started. The Internet is often wrong, but that’s what out there.

Yale had a qb transfer from Nebraska that worked out well as did Penn’s qb from Northwestern. On the other hand, as has been so aptly pointed out, Columbia had Florida and Stanford transfer qb’s who didn’t get the job done.

I wish the best for Mr. Allen and for Dartmouth.

Dartmouth has had several QB transfers, and none have made an impact for various reasons (injury, couldn't beat out teammate, etc.).

Allen seems to have the best credentials of the bunch though.

Nice reference to "Whizzer" White, one of truly great collegiate athletic to professional career arcs of all time.

Is Dartmouth aware that he just had elbow replacement surgery on his right arm?

made a big transfer move knowing fully well that the kid won't play for at least a year makes sense doesn't it and he might not ever have an impact

thanks for the heads up breaking news flash but you might want to read my more skeptical earlier post or are you just trying to rain on our parade,

come on Asia admit it LOL

The question is...

Hoffman/Dawson or Mornhinweg/Nottingham... which is the more likely result?

Excellent question which will be answered on the field this Fall. As Johnny Unitas used to say: “Talk’s cheap, let’s play.”

If Allen "only" ends up being as good as a Morgan Roberts or a Patrick Witt, Dartmouth fans will be very pleased.
